Summer brings community events in Oakland County! For HHS, that means meeting residents in their neighborhoods to provide services like vaccines or lead testing, connections to community resources, and trustworthy health information. If you see us at an event this summer, stop by and meet our amazing staff! We would love to meet you to learn more about your needs, hear your suggestions, and provide assistance.
Make sure to join us at our third annual Health and Housing Summer Fest on Thursday, July 30, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Normandy Oaks Park (4234 Delemere Blvd, Royal Oak). Enjoy fun activities for kids, enter to win prizes, and connect with free health, breastfeeding, and housing resources! This is a great opportunity to beat the back-to-school rush and get ready for school with the following services on site:
-
Free dental screenings for children entering Kindergarten
-
Free lead screenings for children
-
Free hearing screenings and basic ear exam from the University of Michigan
-
Free vision screenings, exams and glasses to those 4-21 years old (while supplies last) from Vision to Learn
-

Stay safe during extreme heat
Extreme heat is a period of high heat and humidity with temperatures above 90 degrees for at least two to three days. During periods of extreme heat your body works extra hard to maintain a normal temperature, which can lead to death. Older adults, children and people with certain illnesses and chronic conditions are at greater risk from extreme heat.
Follow these tips to stay safe and cool:
-
Hydrate early and often. Always have fresh water while working and playing and avoid drinks with high sugar or caffeine.
-
Wear the right clothing. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, breathable clothing that covers exposed skin.
-
Wear sunblock. Apply a high SPF (30 or higher) sunblock before going out in the sun. Make sure to reapply throughout the day.
-
Never leave kids or pets in a vehicle. It’s never safe to leave children or pets in a vehicle while it’s parked — even with a window open. Vehicles can reach dangerously hot temperatures very quickly.
-
Stay in shady areas outside. Try to find areas of shade to keep yourself cool from the sun. It’s better to be outside in the morning and evening times when it’s coolest.
-
If you lose air conditioning, go to a cooling place. If your home is uncomfortably hot due to no air conditioning, there are public places you can stay cool such as local libraries, shopping malls and community centers. There may even be public cooling centers by you.
Breaking ground on Auburn Oaks: Oakland County’s second neuro-inclusive neighborhood
Oakland County's Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund contributed $1.5 million and partnered with Rochester Housing Solutions, Three Oaks Communities, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), Community Housing Network, and other public and private partners to create Oakland County's second neuro-inclusive neighborhood. Partners gathered in Rochester Hills to celebrate the groundbreaking of Auburn Oaks. The development will create new homeownership opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities while fostering an inclusive community alongside neurotypical neighbors. See how this unique collaboration is helping build a future where more residents can live independently, build equity, and thrive by watching this VIDEO.

Family Market Day

Every year, HOP hosts Family Market Day events that provide Oakland County families with a Bridge/SNAP/ WIC card with a $5.00 coupon voucher to spend on fresh produce at the farmers market that day. There is also a resource tent with various Oakland County organizations distributing giveaways and information.

July Is Park and Recreation Month: The power of green space
It's National Park and Recreation Month, and this year's theme is “The Power Of” — the power of nature, connection, play, community, and belonging.
Thanks to the parks millage Oakland County voters approved in November 2024, there is no charge for county residents to enjoy our day-use parks and dog parks. No daily fee, no vehicle permit to remember — just over 7,000 acres of trails, lakes, and open space, open to you at no cost. (Pay-to-play attractions like golf courses, Red Oaks Waterpark, campgrounds, and Holly Oaks ORV Park still carry their own fees.)
Not sure where to start? Pontiac Oaks is new and improved and Independence Oaks in Clarkston is the crown jewel with nearly 1,300 acres wrapped around Crooked Lake and over twelve miles of trails and a swimming beach. You can map every park, trail, and amenity near you on the Oakland County Park Locator.
