Creating communities where every resident can thrive is at the heart of our work in Oakland County.
Earlier this month, we celebrated the groundbreaking of Auburn Oaks in Rochester Hills, Oakland County’s second neuro-inclusive neighborhood designed to create more housing opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) while fostering a welcoming community for residents of all abilities.
Oakland County contributed $1.5 million to help purchase the land through the Oakland Together Housing Trust Fund, which continues to support affordable, attainable and inclusive housing opportunities across our county.
Auburn Oaks is a powerful example of what can happen when government, nonprofits and the private sector come together around a shared vision. Through a collaboration involving Oakland County, Rochester Housing Solutions, Three Oaks Communities, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and other public and private partners, this innovative neighborhood will offer 55 new homes, including condominiums, single-family homes and townhomes.
The project includes 17 condominiums and two single-family homes specifically reserved for adults with IDD, giving residents the opportunity to live more independently while remaining connected to their families and friends.
Auburn Oaks builds on the success of Walton Oaks, Oakland County’s first neuro-inclusive neighborhood, which broke ground in 2024. These developments represent a new approach to housing — one that recognizes that inclusion benefits everyone.
As one parent shared at the groundbreaking, Auburn Oaks represents “hope, dignity and long-term stability” for families seeking more options for their loved ones. That is exactly the kind of impact we want to create: communities where people of all abilities can live and build meaningful connections.
