As we emerge from this long and often gray winter, I find joy in news stories that remind us that warm weather is right around the corner or that celebrate the extraordinary feats of our fellow Michiganians on the world stage.
So please indulge me as I momentarily shift my concentration from policy discussions to something a bit more … relevant and timely for sports fans yearning for a welcome diversion
There is nothing that better signifies the arrival of spring than seeing the Detroit Tigers return to spring training! And this year, there’s even more reason to get excited - the news that Justin Verlander is coming home to play for the team where he started his phenomenal baseball career, and whose hat he’ll surely wear one day on his plaque in Cooperstown.
Even though he’s been gone from Detroit since 2017, I know I’m not the only one who has watched him with the pride that’s a collective trait of Detroit sports fans. We want our guys to do well wherever they play.
And the trio of Skubal, Valdez and Verlander are going to be a blast to watch at Comerica Park. Welcome Home, JV!
For the past couple weeks, my attention has been drawn to Italy for this year’s Winter Olympics where athletes from Oakland County are joining their American teammates in defying the laws of gravity and soaring to new heights of accomplishment.
Among them are:
Madison Chock, a Novi High School grad, and her husband Evan Bates who earned gold and silver medals in ice dancing
Danny O’Shea of Pontiac and his partner Ellie Kam, who won gold in the team pairs’ skating competition;
Megan Keller of Farmington Hills, Dylan Larkin of Waterford and Connor Hellebuyck, a Walled Laked Northern High School grad, who are competing in women’s and men’s hockey, respectively and are expected to bring home medals.
These dedicated and incredible athletes are making us all proud as they represent the United States at the 2026 Olympics.
