Last night, I presented my budget to the County Board of Commissioners, beginning one of our most important collaborations – setting the fiscal plan for the services we provide to you, the residents of Oakland County.
This budget reinforces our commitment to investing in our people, while maintaining our strong reputation for fiscal discipline. And, it is structurally balanced, meaning we will save our healthy rainy-day fund for future emergency needs, not for general operations.
This is a responsible budget during a time when we face uncertainties about how policy and funding decisions made in Washington and Lansing will impact our communities. We’ve already seen the impact of those decisions, including the elimination of a $3 million federal grant used to fund health care workers who were helping prevent disease outbreaks in our nursing homes and an $80,000 cut in grants for the Sheriff Office’s Marine Patrol unit.
That’s why it’s even more important for us to continue to provide services our residents need to grow and succeed.
A few examples of the successful programs we’re supporting in this budget:
- The Housing Trust Fund has helped in the development of more than 700 units of affordable and accessible housing for our residents.
- Public health clinics, wraparound services and $300,000 for the delivery of critical vaccines helps prevent the spread of communicable diseases and keep our residents healthy.
- Our ambitious Oakland80 initiative has already helped more than 8,000 adults and high school students with the education and training needed to start fulfilling careers.
- Investments in our business community through coaching and consulting for small businesses, 3D printers and training for manufacturers and services to help revitalize our downtown corridors.
- Support for our diverse population through an investment in interpreter services and software that allows people to translate our website into more than 60 languages.
- And assistance for our residents facing crushing medical and student loan debt.
This budget also recognizes the important role of law enforcement in keeping our people safe with investments in court security and new gear for the Sheriff’s office and lab equipment the Medical Examiner’s office will use to support police and prosecutors.
We are committed to delivering measurable and transparent results to you, the residents of Oakland County. And we go to work every day, determined to make a real impact in the areas that matter most: a strong economy, healthy and safe residents and opportunities for everyone to live their best lives in this special place we call home.
