The month of June provides an opportunity for us in Oakland County to reflect on what makes us a special and inviting place to live and work.
Let me be clear. We provide services and put the welcome mat out for everyone, no matter your race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. We’re committed to freedom from discrimination, racism, violence and unequal treatment.
We champion diversity, which shouldn’t be viewed as a dirty word, but rather a reflection of our population, which includes nearly 400,000 people who identify as Black, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, and more than 1,000 businesses from 39 countries around the world.
We regard equity as providing a fair opportunity for all to access the American dream and inclusion merely means that no one is left behind in their pursuit of success.
So we proudly embrace the LGBTQ+ community and strive to ensure that acceptance breeds safety and opportunity.
The theme of our Juneteenth celebration is “Stronger Together: Celebrating Freedom and Community” and reflects our commitment to fostering inclusion, collaboration and shared progress for all. Please join us for the festivities at noon on June 18 at the county courthouse.
June may provide the vehicle to remind us of the magnificent melting pot that is Oakland County, but our friends, neighbors and communities represent a 365-day commitment to the values that make us vibrant, and yes, amazingly diverse.
