As August turns into September and summer transitions into fall, explore the outdoors with the naturalists at Wint Nature Center. Register for programming below to learn about nature up close and discover interesting facts about macroinvertebrates, bats and other nocturnal animals. Located in Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston, Wint Nature Center offers several programs to get individuals and families on the trails and involved in nature discovery this season:
- Net some macroinvertebrates living in our waterways to see them up close and personal during Pond Study 101 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Aug. 17. Learn how biologists use the presence of macroinvertebrates to determine water quality. Cost is $5/person

Grandparent’s Day Camp is 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 7. Discover what it takes to be one of Michigan’s nocturnal animals and learn how we know the animals are here. Enjoy making a craft together to light up your nights. An ASL interpreter will be provided. Cost is $5/person
- Join us for an immersive drumming experience to celebrate the arrival of fall and connect with the natural rhythms of the season from 2-3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 during NatureFit: Equinox Drum Circle. Led by Teri Williams from Soul Practices. No experience necessary. This unique event invites participants of all ages to join in the collective joy of creating harmonious beats, fostering a sense of community and tapping into the spirit of the fall equinox. Rain or shine. Drum circle will move indoors if needed. Cost is $5/person
Don't forget about our regular, recurring programs, too:
- Bring your little ones to Wint Nature Center for a caregiver-guided hour of activities, fun and friendship with local families from 10:30-11:30 a.m. every Thursday during the Early Childhood Hour Out (ECHO) program. This program is free and no preregistration is necessary, although park entry fee applies for those without a vehicle permit. Caregivers must supervise children at all times. Siblings are welcome
- Call to set up a free personal, naturalist-guided nature hike during A Walk In the Woods from 10-10:45 a.m. Aug. 23 and Sept. 27. This program is held the fourth Friday of each month. Participants will learn about seasonal topics while getting exercise and enjoying the great outdoors. Please, no pets. Park entry fee applies
- Children ages 3-6 can enjoy nature fun as they increase their love for the outdoors during the Puddle Jumpers preschool program from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 13. A naturalist will engage children with a story, nature talk and a related hands-on activity. Each child will make a craft to take home. September’s theme is Food Chains: What’s for Dinner. This program is held the second Friday of each month. Cost is $5/child
- Discover how beautiful blossoms develop into apples, try your hand at our cider press, and discover what trees are doing in the fall on a hike during the Homeschool program Apples, Trees and Cider, Please! from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sept. 18. Homeschool sessions are adapted for two age groups: Ages 6-9 and ages 10-13. Cost is $10/child/session. Sessions are designed as a drop-off program for youth. All students are welcome, including those from a traditional homeschool, pod or virtual learning setting. A release form must be completed with registration. This program is scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month

Wint Nature Center
Wint Nature Center, located within Independence Oaks County Park, provides hands-on natural history exhibits, a captive live animal collection and an outdoor sensory garden as well as a bird feeding station and natural viewing area. Year-round educational programs presented by park naturalists are available to the public. American Sign Language interpreters are available during specific programs as noted on the Nature Education Program Schedule. Specialized nature programs include in person and virtual field trips, naturalist-led hikes and Wild Birthday Parties. Community Outreach Programs include nature presentations and nature information and touch tables. StarLab inflatable planetarium can be booked either at the nature center or as an outreach program.
