Start summer off right with nature education
Summertime and warmer weather is definitely here, so make the most of it by getting outdoors. Register for the seasonal programming below to explore nature firsthand at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights and Wint Nature Center in Clarkston:
- Learn about animals that call local waterways home, conduct water experiments and make an aqua-themed craft from 2-3:30 p.m. June 15 at Red Oaks Nature Center during the Water Wonderland program. Cost is $5/person
- Where the Wild Things Live Summer Camp is a three-day camp that explores local habitats and the animals that call them home. Each day there will be an interactive talk, hike, activities and more. This is a drop-off program for ages 6-12 from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. June 25-27 at Wint Nature Center. Cost is $10/child/day
- Learn about seasonal topics while getting some exercise during A Walk in the Woods, scheduled from 10-10:45 a.m. June 21 at Red Oaks Nature Center and June 28 at Wint Nature Center (park entry fee applies).
A variety of programming is also offered for preschoolers during the summer months.
In addition, mark your calendar for a new weekly program at Wint called Early Childhood Hour Out (ECHO). Parents, grandparents, nannies and caregivers are invited to bring their little ones to Wint Nature Center for a caregiver-guided hour of activities, fun and friendship with local families on Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Participate in a caregiver-led activity provided by nature center staff and enjoy coffee, tea and conversation with other caregivers while strengthening community connections. This program is free and no preregistration is necessary, although park entry fee applies for those without a vehicle permit. Caregivers must supervise children at all times. Siblings are welcome. Red Oaks Nature Center
Red Oaks Nature Center is nestled in 37-acre Friendship Woods, which offers an outdoor component for family nature programs. The center’s interior includes native live animals, displays and classroom space. A 1.3-mile paved trail is used for programs and local residents to hike, bike and walk. The sensory trail features a storybook trail. Year-round educational programs presented by park naturalists are available to the public. American Sign Language interpreters are available during specific programs as noted on the Nature Education Program Schedule. Braille is included on the animal displays. Specialized nature programs include in person and virtual field trips, naturalist-led hikes and Wild Birthday Parties. Community Outreach Programs include nature presentations and nature information and touch tables. StarLab inflatable planetarium can be booked either at the nature center or as an outreach program.

Wint Nature Center
Wint Nature Center, located within Independence Oaks County Park, provides hands-on natural history exhibits, a captive live animal collection and an outdoor sensory garden as well as a bird feeding station and natural viewing area. Year-round educational programs presented by park naturalists are available to the public. American Sign Language interpreters are available during specific programs as noted on the Nature Education Program Schedule. Specialized nature programs include in person and virtual field trips, naturalist-led hikes and Wild Birthday Parties. Community Outreach Programs include nature presentations and nature information and touch tables. StarLab inflatable planetarium can be booked either at the nature center or as an outreach program.
