TrailBlazers walking series to visit Pontiac Oaks

Join Oakland County Parks staff for a scenic walk while discovering information about the park and trails during the 2024 TrailBlazer Walking Series. This is a free monthly program featuring 1-mile informational hikes (trails available for longer hikes) and is a great way to get in your steps.

The May TrailBlazer program will take participants to Pontiac Oaks County Park from 6-7 p.m. May 17. The topic will be OakWilt.

TrailBlazers is a series that runs through November. Each session is held at a different park and features a new topic. Upcoming programs include:

  • Turtles, 6-7 p.m. June 28 at Groveland Oaks County Park
  • Invasive Species, 6-7 p.m. July 26 at Addison Oaks County Park
  • Biogeography, 6-7 p.m. Aug. 23 at Rose Oaks County Park
  • Beavers, 6-7 p.m. Sept. 20 at Highland Oaks County Park
  • Restoring Michigan’s Oak Barrens, 6-7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Addison Oaks County Park – East
  • Owls, 6-7 p.m. Nov. 8 at Independence Oaks County Park

Each program is limited to 20 people and preregistration is required. Pontiac Oaks County Park is free to enter, but a daily park pass is needed at the remaining parks for those who do not have a vehicle permit sticker. Walkers should dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and bug spray.

Pontiac Oaks County Park

Pontiac Oaks County Park, formerly known as Hawthorne Park, preserves 77 acres of green space in a lush, beautiful setting filled with mature trees, abundant nature areas and numerous recreational activities. The park features the shorelines of Creger Lake and Upper Silver Lake with water access for kayaking, canoeing and fishing provided through a dock and boat launch. Pontiac Oaks features a playground, pavilion, horseshoes pits and an 18-hole disc golf course. A dedicated picnic area includes tables, grills and trash receptacles. Minimal restroom facilities are available. Oakland County is investing more than $1.5 million to improve park facilities and has assumed long-term responsibility for park management and maintenance. The City of Pontiac retains ownership of the park property and collaborates with Oakland County Parks regarding the future of the park.
