Hello Immunization Partners,
Please share the following information with staff and colleagues.
Previously, inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) recommendations for U.S. adults addressed adults known to be at risk for poliovirus exposure, however, on June 21, 2023, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) issued an Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) recommendation for all adults known or suspected to be unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated against polio. Risk-based recommendations for IPV boosters have not changed.
On December 8, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) titled Use of Inactivated Polio Vaccine Among U.S. Adults: Updated Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices — United States, 2023. This report contains recommendations for adults aged 18 years and older who are known or suspected to be unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated against polio to complete a primary polio vaccination series with IPV. Fully vaccinated adults at increased risk for poliovirus exposure may receive a single lifetime booster dose of IPV.
Thank you for all you do!
