Dear Immunization Partners,

Please share the following information with colleagues and staff in your practice.

On March 14, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorization (EUA) of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Bivalent to provide for a single booster dose of the vaccine in children 6 months through 4 years of age at least 2 months after completion of primary vaccination with three doses of the monovalent (single strain) Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.

On March 16, 2023, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued two important updates to the Interim Clinical Considerations for Use of COVID-19 Vaccines Currently Approved or Authorized in the United States. The updates are outlined below.

  • New recommendation for children ages 6 months through 4 years who previously completed a 3-dose monovalent Pfizer-BioNTech primary series to receive 1 bivalent Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose at least 2 months after completion of the 3-dose monovalent primary series.

COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older in the United States for the prevention of COVID-19. CDC recommends that people get up to date with COVID-19 vaccination as soon as feasible.

Thank you,

Oakland County Health Division, Immunization Action Plan
