Bi-Weekly Executive Newsletter
Dear Friends,
This is one of my favorite times of the year.
We’re preparing for my annual State of the County speech – I hope you’ll mark your calendar for 7 p.m. March 14 to tune in – and are brimming with pride in the work we’ve done in the past year and anticipation of the new and exciting challenges to come.
It’s also that time of year when I have the honor of introducing you to the latest class of the Oakland Together 40 under 40.
The 40 under 40 Class of 2023 is a group of inspirational individuals who are not only successful in their careers, but also have demonstrated a passion for public service and a dedication to their communities.
A truly impressive group of more than 170 people applied for this year’s class and those selected include cancer researchers and lawyers, leaders and entrepreneurs, non-profit executives and educators. They embody the Oakland Together message that encompasses talent, skill and excellence in their careers, coupled with working collaboratively to improve the quality of life for their neighbors and families, friends and strangers alike.
The class reflects the rich and diverse populations that make up every vital and vibrant corner of Oakland County. And the program doesn’t just look good on a resume for those who are part of this and previous classes. These groups of talented young people build strong networks with each other to collaborate on projects for the betterment of our communities.
We intend to tap into their expertise, creativity and innovation on initiatives that the county is interested in pursuing. This class expands our growing list of professionals who can offer suggestions when we’re looking to improve our services, start new programs and expand the resources available to our residents and businesses.
In the midst of challenges and turmoil in the country these days, this list of leaders gives me confidence that the future is in good hands. I’m excited to see what they accomplish in the years to come.

Grants for seniors awarded
Nearly 30 senior centers across Oakland County are benefitting from $5 million in grants through an initiative started by Oakland County and approved by the Board of Commissioners.
Grants ranging from $25,000 to $250,000 have been awarded to centers across the county, from Wixom to Ortonville, Hazel Park to Leonard and many communities in between.
Among the projects approved by the county are: improvements to facilities from new roofs to upgraded kitchens and nutrition programs; the addition of recreational activities, including pickleball courts; safety and security upgrades; the purchase of laptops, charging stations and technology instructors and creation of a landscape sensory garden.
Since 2015, Oakland County’s senior population has been greater than the population of children and that trend is expected to continue until 2045. So the county is investing federal American Rescue Plan funding for upgrades to senior centers, which are providing exciting opportunities for social events, exercise classes, nutrition and meal programs and education classes that will help keep Oakland County’s older residents engaged, active and healthier, both physically and mentally well past retirement.
In addition, the county has created a new position – director of Older Adult Services that has been filled for former state Representative and Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison. He is working with the older population in Oakland to make sure they know about all the great local, state and federal resources that are available.
