A Message From Ingrid Tighe

Oakland County Economic Development Director

Ingrid Tighe

Dear Colleagues,

Since there is so much to be grateful for, I would like to kick off the Thanksgiving season a little early. First of all, I am grateful that our two major fall events were a great success: the Consul General Reception and Manufacturing Day. At our Consul General Reception hosted on the beautiful Cranbrook grounds, ties were strengthened between our Economic Development team and global leaders, representing countries all over the world. On Manufacturing Day, we had almost 800 students visiting 31 advanced manufacturing companies throughout Oakland County.  You can learn more about this year’s event as well as the history of Manufacturing Day in the Data Corner section below.

I am also excited to announce this year's Small Business Saturday Campaign featuring a Local Gems Sweepstake! From November 1-26, please encourage everyone you know—whether they are business owners, community leaders, or the general public—to take part. It is a great way to give our local small businesses some extra visibility. Plus, those who enter will have a chance to win some extra holiday shopping cash.

This time of year has me thinking of friends and family, and that includes my work family—the talented team of Economic Development employees. I want to take a moment to welcome our newest members: Madeleine Daniels in the Planning & Local Business Development Division (P&LBD), and Nicole Beecher, Jonathan DeSanctis, Kathleen Hout, LaShumbra Singleton, and Wisam Brikho all on the Oakland County Business Forward team. However, we cannot forget our long-time employees either, who have worked so diligently to serve the residents of Oakland County, like P&LBD’s Ron Campbell who just received the Michigan Historic Preservation Network’s (MHPN) Lifetime Achievement Award. Congratulations, Ron! This recognition is well-deserved!

Last, but certainly not least, I want honor my fellow Veterans this month and wish them an early "Happy Veterans Day" and "Happy Birthday to the Marine Corps!" As a county, we have several special initiatives planned to honor our local Veterans, which includes Operation Green Light as well as three Oakland County Resource Fairs. We hope to see you there.

Last month, Oakland County Executive David Coulter and Cranbrook’s President Aimeclaire Roche hosted a reception honoring the Consular Corps of Michigan at the beautiful Cranbrook Art Museum. It was a great opportunity for our Economic Development team to meet with global leaders from countries such as France, Latvia, Japan and Switzerland–to name a few of the 20+ countries represented. Oakland County, MI Shop Small & Local

Small Business Saturday Campaign Features a Sweepstake in November

November 1-26, a “Local Gems” Sweepstake encourages the public, business owners, and community leaders to submit a selfie taken at their favorite Oakland County small businesses for a chance at winning some extra cash for holiday shopping.  The prize money, $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place, is provided by Genisys Credit Union.

The sweepstake is part of the Economic Development Department’s annual Small Business Saturday Campaign to help build visibility, foot traffic, and sales for small businesses in Oakland County during the holiday shopping season.

A participant can be from anywhere; however, the business featured must be in Oakland County.  To increase their odds of winning, each participant can submit multiple entries with each business being different.  Only Oakland County employees and contractors are ineligible.

Shopping small and local in the county’s downtowns can be particularly fun during the holidays, as many of them have special events and activities.  For example, Main Street Oakland County communities like Rochester have The Big Bright Light Show, and the Village of Holly has the Holly Dickens Festival.  Each downtown in the county is worth exploring.

Printed sweepstake cards and posters are available to communities, chambers, and businesses while supplies last.  Contact Erick Phillips to place your order at phillipse@oakgov.com

Beginning November 1, participants can find the sweepstake entry form at OakGov.com/ShopSmall

Ron Campbell

Michigan Historic Preservation Network’s (MHPN) Lifetime Achievement Award

The MHPN Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the field of historic preservation.  For nearly 50 years, Ron Campbell, AIA, has devoted himself to using planning, design, historic preservation, and adaptive reuse to safeguard Michigan's architectural legacy.

After receiving a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan, Ron worked his way up to senior partner at a successful architectural and engineering firm.  Since 2006, he has been a principal planner and preservation architect for Oakland County’s Planning & Local Business Development Division.  His design assistance to the Main Street Oakland County Program and his contributions to the National Main Street Center Leadership Committee are significant.  He also chaired the National Main Street Architects organization.

“Ron has guided preservation projects across and beyond Michigan,” says John Bry, program coordinator, Main Street Oakland County.  “He sees preservation as an alternative to demolition and believes historic preservation supports a community’s social, environmental and financial needs.  And, you may meet him during one of the many presentations and tours he does each year.”

Some of his revitalization and adaptive reuse projects include the Vinsetta Garage restaurant (Berkley), conversion of the Van Hoosen Barn into a museum (Rochester Hills), and reuse of the former Sears department store and warehouse into a market and residential lofts (Pontiac).  He is currently working on the fire-damaged buildings in historic downtown Holly and advising on flood-damaged businesses in Kentucky.

He serves on the Michigan Construction Code Commission and as a Governor Appointee to the Barrier Free Design Board, helping businesses be accessible for all.  Ron chaired the Flint Historic District Study Committee; is a life member of the Genesee County Historical Society; and co-authored, with Jackie Hoist, “Michigan's Destination Depots: Lighthouses Along the Rivers of Steel.”

He has been a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for 47 years, including terms as president of AIA Michigan and the Flint Chapter.  He chaired the team from Flint that developed the first AIA free pamphlet, “A Guide to Flint Architecture.”  The guide won a national award and spurred other chapters and regions to do their own versions.

A founding member of the MHPN, Ron served on the Board from 1981- 1987 and 2012- 2021. He holds the distinction of chairing three statewide conferences and is known as an indefatigable volunteer, a great photographer, and an effective speaker.

Main Street communities needing design assistance can contact John Bry at bryj@oakgov.com or (248) 858-5444

Oakland Transit | All ways, moving forward

Oakland Transit Millage on November 8 Ballot

The Oakland Transportation Millage—0.95 mills—is coming up on the Nov. 8 ballot and will provide funding for the SMART bus system, Western Oakland Transportation Authority (WOTA), North Oakland Transportation Authority (NOTA), and the Older Person’s Commission (OPC) in the Rochester area.

The proposed .95 mils will generate additional funds for local transit providers to maintain and expand existing services, providing additional rides and connections.  In 2021, WOTA, NOTA and OPC provided nearly 90,000 rides to residents for doctors’ appointments, grocery shopping, school and other essential destinations.  Also, SMART provides more than 3.7 million rides on fixed routes and more than 200,000 connector rides each year to residents in Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb counties.

Additional proposed funding for the SMART bus system will expand transportation to major employment centers, like Novi, and provide routes and on-demand connector services to areas that are not currently being served.  This initiative will allow the expansion of reservation-based and app-based services provided by SMART. Last year, in Oakland County, more than 115,000 reservation-based rides were provided.

This ballot initiative will be on Oakland County ballots on Nov. 8.  All Oakland County communities would contribute to and benefit from public transportation with this Oakland Transportation Millage.  Funds generated in Oakland County will stay in Oakland to provide transportation options for the county’s residents and businesses.

If you are in one of the 24 communities that pays the SMART tax now, this millage will replace the current tax, and it will be slightly less than what you are paying today.  The millage will cost the average homeowner in Oakland County about $9 a month.

Local service details will be developed collaboratively with members of the public, community organizations, transit providers, local governments, and county leadership.

Oakland County is committed to full transparency with meetings and oversight. The funds will be administered, distributed, and annually audited by Oakland County.

For additional information about the Oakland Transit Millage, visit: oakgov.com/OaklandTransit/Pages/default.aspx

Students exploring manufacturing careers on MFG Day

Oakland County Manufacturing Day successfully returns to an in-person event

Nearly 800 students participated in this year’s Oakland County Manufacturing Day, which returned to an in-person format for the first time in three years.  Students and teachers from 18 school districts and the four Oakland County Schools technical campuses visited 31 advanced manufacturers on Friday, Oct. 7.

During their three-hour visit, participants received tours of design labs, testing centers and assembly operations, as well as participated in hands-on activities and engaged with employees to learn about career paths, skills and entry-level job opportunities.

The Oakland County Department of Economic Development, Oakland County Michigan Works!, Oakland Schools and Oakland Community College partnered to organize the event.

“Oakland County is the epicenter of advanced manufacturing and we’re excited to connect our employers and students for these tours,” said Oakland County Executive David Coulter before the event.  “Events like Manufacturing Day inspire students to begin their journeys toward successful careers and allow employers to meet with the workforce of the future.”

Financial supporters included sponsors Williams International, AAM, Fata Automation, Gonzalez Production Systems, Heller Machine Tools, Hi-Tech Mold & Engineering, Humanetics, Oakland Community College and Witzenmann USA.

“We recognize that by exposing young students to the world of manufacturing, we can play a role in closing the skilled trades gap experienced in the labor market,” said Colleen Schmerheim, senior vice president at Williams International.

Students and teachers expressed their appreciation for returning to an in-person event.

“Thank you so much for the fabulous experience you provided our students today for Manufacturing Day,” said Kathy Jones from Hazel Park Schools.  “Our students were so attentive and interested in all the information being presented by Mayville Engineering Company staff.  They did a great job.”
