Learn the many answers to the question “What makes Michigan unique?” during the September Homeschool Curriculum program Smitten with our Mitten scheduled at Red Oaks Nature Center and Wint Nature Center.
Discover history, fun facts and more about our state. This unique homeschool session will be held from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sep. 8 at Red Oaks Nature Center in Madison Heights and from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Wint Nature Center in Independence Oaks County Park, Clarkston. Sessions are adapted for two age groups: Ages 6-9 and ages 10-13.
Cost is $10/child/session. Preregistration with payment is required by calling 248-858-0916 weekdays. No on-site registration will be available. Sessions are designed as a drop-off program for youth. All students are welcome, including those from a traditional homeschool, pod or virtual learning setting. A release form must be completed with registration.
Red Oaks Nature Center
Red Oaks Nature Center is located 30300 Hales St. in Madison Heights. The nature center is nestled in 37-acre Friendship Woods, which offers an outdoor component for family nature programs. The center’s interior includes native live animals, displays and classroom space. A 1.3-mile paved trail is used for programs and local residents to hike, bike and walk. The sensory trail features a storybook trail. Year-round educational programs presented by park naturalists are available to the public. Specialized nature programs include in person and virtual field trips, naturalist-led hikes, Scout Badge Days and Wild Birthday Parties. Community Outreach Programs include nature presentations and nature information and touch tables. StarLab inflatable planetarium can be booked either at the nature center or as an outreach program.

Wint Nature Center
Wint Nature Center, located in Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston, provides hands-on natural history exhibits, a captive live animal collection and an outdoor sensory garden as well as a bird feeding station and natural viewing area. Year-round educational programs presented by park naturalists are available to the public. Specialized nature programs include in person and virtual field trips, naturalist-led hikes, Scout Badge Days and Wild Birthday Parties. Community Outreach Programs include nature presentations and nature information and touch tables. StarLab inflatable planetarium can be booked either at the nature center or as an outreach program.
