Hi there,
This was our first week of giving Moderna and Johnson & Johnson boosters. We are encouraged by how many people are coming out to ensure they are as protected as possible. Some of you may prefer a different vaccine type for your booster and you can now mix and match your booster doses. Please consult with your healthcare provider if you have questions about which booster to get.
Remember to bring a copy of your COVID-19 vaccine record with you to your booster dose appointment. If yours is misplaced, immunization records can be downloaded online and printed for free at the Michigan Immunization Portal.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) met to discuss use of the Pfizer in children 5 through 11 years of age. VRBPAC voted in favor of recommending vaccination for 5-11 year old’s. CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) is expected to meet next week to further discuss these recommendations. I am hopeful this age group will be authorized soon, so we can take our next big step in fighting COVID-19!
Hear a brief update about vaccines and COVID-19 topics and read below for some Halloween safety tips:
In vaccination coverage news, at least 74.8% of those 12 years and older have received at least their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Visit the state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard and the Oakland County Vaccine Hub for even more vaccination data.

Halloween is here-Celebrate COVID free!
As celebrations like Halloween and Día de los Muertos approach, protect yourself, your friends and family from COVID-19. Get your free COVID-19 vaccine as soon as you can (age 12 and over) to help prevent infection and severe illness during upcoming holidays. We recommend children and adults get vaccinated also for flu as soon as possible. Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given in the same visit.
These additional tricks can keep people safe including younger children not yet able to be vaccinated:
- Stay home if you are sick.
- Wear a mask that covers the mouth and nose. A costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask.
- Do not wear a costume mask over a protective cloth mask if wearing both causes difficulty breathing. Instead, consider using a Halloween-themed cloth mask.
- Wash hands often and/or use hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol. And cough or sneeze into your elbow.
- Talk with children about Halloween safety and expectations.
- Stay outdoors for activities, particularly if participants are not vaccinated.
- Trick or treat in small groups.
- Avoid congregating in groups around houses.
Tips for homeowners to consider:
- Distribute candy on a table to eliminate direct contact.
- Hand out candy in an open space where distancing is possible, rather than from the front door.
- Plan a neighborhood costume parade; it is an easy way to keep safe space between children.
Booster dose eligibility
Check our website for details about booster eligibility. If you are unsure about whether to get a booster or have questions talk to a healthcare provider.
FAQ: I didn’t get my second dose of a 2-dose COVID-19 vaccine in the right timeframe, what should I do?
Get your second shot as close to the recommended 3-week or 4-week interval as possible. If you receive your second shot at any time after the recommended date, you do not have to restart the vaccine series, and are considered fully vaccinated 2 weeks after getting your second shot. This guidance might be updated as more information becomes available.
