Hi there,
Over the last two days, FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) has been meeting to discuss the use of booster doses of the Moderna and the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson (J & J) vaccine. VRBPAC has voted in favor of recommending a booster dose of the Moderna and J & J vaccine for many people. CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) is scheduled to meet October 21 to further discuss these recommendations.
After authorization, we are ready to supply booster doses of all three vaccines at our clinics across the county. Visit our Vaccine Hub for our locations and the links to other providers, such as pharmacies that are also vaccinating. We remain focused on getting people their first and second doses to gain primary immunity. Our Medical Director, Dr. Russell Faust recently talked about the urgency of initial vaccination before or during pregnancy. You can view that video here:

Our current 7-day average positivity rate is now 8% (10/7/21-10/13/21). Cases continue to increase in unvaccinated populations like younger children and we have some breakthrough cases in fully immunized individuals who may be experiencing waning immunity. That’s where booster doses can help. Vaccination is a huge tool against COVID-19, but so are strategies such as isolation and quarantine that help stop further spread. Below we provide the latest guidelines about both to answer any questions in case you are a close contact or develop COVID-19.
74.2% of those 12 years and older have received at least their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Visit the state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard and the Oakland County Vaccine Hub for even more vaccination data.
In good health,

Vaccinated vs unvaccinated: Quarantine and isolation guidelines
As the number of people who are fully vaccinated goes up, the number of breakthrough infections will also increase as vaccines are not 100% effective. Most people who get COVID-19 are unvaccinated. The risk of infection, hospitalization, and death are all lower in vaccinated vs. unvaccinated people.
So how do quarantine and isolation guidelines affect you if you are vaccinated, unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated? Here’s the low-down:
Fully vaccinated
- People who are fully vaccinated do not need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms.
- If you have COVID-19 symptoms, get tested and stay away from others immediately until a negative viral (PCR) test result is received.
- If you’ve had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, get tested 3-5 days after your exposure, even if you don’t have symptoms. Wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or until you receive a negative test result.
Unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated
- Anyone who has had close contact with someone with COVID-19 should stay home 24/7 for 10 days. Watch for symptoms, wear a mask and maintain physical distance (at least 6 feet) from others for up to 14 days.
- If you live with someone or stay in ongoing contact with a person who has COVID-19, begin counting quarantine days after the person has fully recovered (usually 10 days after symptoms began or 10 days after test was collected if they have no symptoms).
Anyone vaccinated, unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated
- After testing positive for COVID-19:
-
People with symptoms:Isolation can end at least 10 days after symptoms began and 24 hours after no fever without fever reducing medications and symptoms have improved.
-
People without symptoms:Isolation can end 10 days after first positive test. If symptoms develop after testing positive, follow the guidance in the bullet above.
-
Most people do not require testing to determine when isolation can end and they can return to work, school, etc. The virus that causes COVID-19 may be detected by testing for up to 3 months after illness. However, the virus is unlikely to be infectious.
- If the test was within the previous 90 days, you have recovered and remain symptom-free, you do not need to quarantine if you come in close contact to someone with COVID-19. Wear a mask and monitor for symptoms for 14 days. Isolate immediately if symptoms develop.
FAQ: Am I fully vaccinated if I don’t receive a booster shot?
Yes. Everyone is still considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a 2-shot series, such as the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as the Jonson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine.
