A Message from Ingrid Tighe
Oakland County Economic Development Director
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you to everyone who joined our Economic Outlook live broadcast on June 9. Oakland County Executive David Coulter was joined by University of Michigan Economists Dr. Gabriel Ehrlich and Donald Grimes as they shared the 36th annual report. This report was especially compelling this year as our economy begins to emerge from the global COVID-19 pandemic as it lays out an expected path for recovery and strong long-term economic growth. For a recording of the event and a PDF copy of the report, visit: OakGov.com/EconomicOutlook.
In July, our Local Business Development team will launch the Local Business Connect roadshow training sessions for small businesses throughout Oakland County. Our goal with this training series launch is to bring the support and training small businesses need directly to their communities to support their recovery, resilience and long-term success. We are proud to strengthen our partnership with the Michigan Small Business Development Corporation to broaden the support services offered to local businesses.
This month we announced a diversification through federal contracting program to help grow the supplier base and increase investment in companies throughout Oakland County. The intention of this program is to support Oakland County businesses diversify their customer portfolio, understand how federal contracting may fit into their long-range plans and give them the tools they need to win these contracts.
As summer begins, and our communities begin to emerge, I hope you will take time to enjoy the beautiful spaces, outstanding festivals and world-class downtowns.

Oakland County Communities Lead the State in Social Districts to Support Their Restaurants and Bars
Oakland County has eight social districts, currently the most in the state. Clarkston, Farmington, Ferndale, Pontiac, Royal Oak and the villages of Holly, Lake Orion and Oxford have all established Social Districts to support their restaurants and bars that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A Social District is a common area where an alcoholic beverage can be consumed, within guidelines. These Social Districts have become fun gathering spots for visitors from summer through winter—where igloos, greenhouses and outside heaters were added.

Summer is a Good Time to Identify the Invasive Species Near You
Oakland County CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area) can help your community identify and prevent invasive species that can reduce property values, create safety hazards and damage the environment. CISMA is currently surveying the Clinton River Trail, and staff have discovered invasives like Phragmites, swallow-wort and knotweed. Aquatic invasive species are becoming a problem in Oakland County waterways. European frog-bit has been found in Novi and Northville. This aquatic invasive grows rapidly, forming thick mats which impede boat travel, prevent waterfowl from landing and block light from reaching plants below the surface—leading to low-oxygen water conditions that negatively impact fish, turtles, and frogs. An informational public meeting about European frog-bit will be held on July 14 at 7 p.m. To learn more visit: OaklandInvasiveSpecies.org
