Hi there,
Hope you have stayed warm in our cold Michigan weather!
The state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard reports 194,684 doses have been given to Oakland County residents including 32,319 doses administered by the Oakland County Health Division. This is a success in our fight against COVID-19. Vaccination is a team effort, not just by one of the county health department. The county’s network of approved vaccination providers is expanding, and we are helping hospitals, pharmacies and any other qualified providers with their ability to receive vaccine and get people quickly vaccinated.
We are also working to reduce disparities and ensure vaccine availability to communities at greater risk of adverse outcomes from COVID-19. While supplies are low, outreach efforts will reach populations and communities who may have more difficulty accessing vaccination. One example is a newly established site location we launched today in Pontiac.
Please take a few minutes and watch my weekly Vaccine Update video for more information about how Oakland County is progressing with our vaccination efforts.
Thank you for your continued support!
In good health,
Leigh-Anne Stafford Oakland County Health Officer
Michigan’s COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services recently outlined a comprehensive vaccination strategy which centers around the following ambitious but achievable goals:
- 70% of Michiganders age 16 and up vaccinated as quickly as possible.
- 90% of received vaccines are administered within 7 days.
- 95% of people get their second dose of vaccine within an acceptable time frame.
- No one has to drive more than 20 minutes to reach a vaccination site.
- No disparity exists in vaccination rates across racial and ethnic groups or by social vulnerability index.
Oakland County is forming partnerships to help us meet this framework. As vaccine supply increases, our vaccination network stands ready to roll-out planned strategies to achieve these goals.
Not a single vaccine goes unused
We are often asked if there are leftover vaccine doses at the end of the day and what we do with those. It is very rare that we have leftover vaccine at the end of the day. We only deliver enough vaccine to each site for scheduled appointments. In addition, we prepare vaccine onsite. In the final hours of a clinic, we draw up vaccine as each appointment arrives to avoid having any unused vaccine doses. In the uncommon instance there may be a dose left, we use it to vaccinate those eligible such as first responders, healthcare workers or an eligible individual called off our Save Your Spot list.
Please do not show up to our vaccine clinics without an appointment. Not only will we not be able to vaccinate you without an appointment, we need to ensure proper social distancing and safe traffic flow at our locations. Your cooperation is appreciated!
Some drive-thru sites temporarily moved indoors
Each week we watch temperatures and weather closely. We may temporarily switch some of our locations from drive-thru to indoors to ensure customer, staff and vaccine safety. If this occurs, you will always be notified well in advance of your appointment with any additional details necessary.
Make sure to dress for the weather in the chance a portion of your appointment process is outside.
Vaccination appointment reminder
Please arrive to your vaccination appointment at your scheduled time and refrain from arriving early or very late. Appointments are scheduled to make sure we can maintain social distancing, traffic and client flow through a site. Arriving early or very late can cause longer lines and bottlenecks in the process. Thank you for your cooperation!
