Three dog parks provide hours of off-leash fun
Getting some exercise in the fresh air does everyone good – especially our canine companions! Oakland County Parks and Recreation (OCPR) operates three dog parks that provide dogs with hours of off-leash fun at Lyon Oaks, Orion Oaks and Red Oaks county parks.
We love seeing dogs running around, enjoying a game of tug-o-war, chasing tennis balls and jumping into Lake Sixteen from the dog dock at Orion Oaks Dog Park. We share photos of our dog guests often on OCPR’s social media and love hearing stories about dog play groups and their adventures at the parks.
Visiting the dog parks is a fun activity for humans, too, as it provides opportunities for conversation among people who love dogs and gives new pet parents a chance to connect with others for guidance and advice.
Many of our dog park guests visit their favorite park often because it is familiar for them and their dogs and probably close to home, but we encourage everyone to explore all three dog parks as each has different features and provides a change of scenery. The three places to play include:
- Lyon Oaks Dog Park in Wixom, with 13 acres including a small dog area, canine drink-filling stations, benches, shelter, picnic tables and field training area
- Orion Oaks Dog Park in Lake Orion, featuring 24 acres with a separate small dog area, canine drink-filling stations, modern restrooms, field training area, two trails and access to 80-foot dock and Lake Sixteen for dogs only to swim
- Red Oaks Dog Park in Madison Heights, a 5.2-acre parcel with a shelter, small dog area, canine drink-filling station during warmer months, paved parking lot and limited street light illumination for extended hours in fall and winter
The three dog parks are part of OCPR’s 13-park system, which also includes two nature centers, two waterparks, two campgrounds, five golf courses and a new ORV park. On Nov. 3, 2020, residents will be asked to vote on a millage replacement and increase to .35 mills to improve, operate, and maintain parks, open space and water areas, trails and recreation activities.
Every year, more than 2 million people visit the 13 Oakland County Parks, located in all four quadrants of Oakland County for seasonal recreation and activities. The parks system is funded by a millage that has never increased since 1966. The current .2310 millage rate is set to expire Dec. 31, 2021. If approved, the .35 rate will cost the owner of a home or business valued at $200,000 (taxable value of $100,000 approximately) $12 more, for a total of $35 year to maintain the Oakland County Parks and Recreation system.
Providing places for residents and their canine companions to enjoy an active lifestyle is one way Oakland County Parks and Recreation provides Great Parks for Great People. Learn more on our website, OaklandCountyParks.com or by following us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
