ORV park approved by county commissioners
The Oakland County ORV Park received its official green light from the Oakland County Board of Commissioners April 2 when the board unanimously approved a 20-year operating agreement, with a 10-year additional option, with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR). Under the agreement, Oakland County Parks and Recreation (OCPR) will operate the ORV Park, located in Groveland and Holly townships, in partnership with the MDNR.
The park, consisting of former (and currently active) sand and gravel mines, is across Dixie Highway from Groveland Oaks County Park and Campground. It features easy access along Dixie Highway and off I-75 at the Grange Hall Road exit.
Planning for the park is underway with a design expected later this summer. OCPR will complete construction in early spring 2020 and plans to have the park open to the public by July 2020.
The park has yet to be formally named, although the lease agreement refers to it as Holly Oaks ORV Park. OCPR staff indicated that a new name will likely be selected later this year.
While the park will not open to the public in 2019, it is available for club and corporate use through the MDNR’s Special Use Permit process. These “test events” will help OCPR plan and design the site by getting feedback on what currently exists and talking with ORV users. If you are a club or business interested in holding an event at the site this summer, please email Jon Noyes, Principal Planner with Oakland County Parks and Recreation at noyesj@oakgov.com.
A public meeting will be held later this spring to discuss the plan for the park, which will be open to all ORV users – stay tuned for additional information. Please see the full press release for additional information.
Updates will provided via e-mail as OCPR works through the planning and design process. Those interested in receiving further ORV-related emails can update their digital subscription below. Thank you for your interest in the Oakland County ORV Park.
