Katherine Wildern of Puppy Patrol 4-H Club had a great summer fair season in 2018.
It all started at the Oakland County Fair in July where Katie won three 1st place and one 4th place drawing award which led to a prestigious Gold Ribbon Scholarship that allowed her to enter her exhibits in the Michigan State Fair in August.
At the Michigan State Fair over Labor Day weekend, Katie's accolades grew to include 1st place in colored pencil; 1st place in digital art; 2nd place in pastel; 2nd place in charcoal; 2nd place in painting; 3rd place in pencil and the Michigan State Fair $500 Art Scholarship!
Because she won the Michigan State Fair Art Scholarship, she was invited to attend a recognition event at the Michigan State Capitol, but was unable to attend.
Katie's mom Nicole said "These wonderful awards all started because of 4-H and Katie is so grateful!" Deanne Holmes leader of the Puppy Patrol sums, up all of our feelings by saying "We are so very proud of her!"
Oakland County 4-H has developed an all online system for our local awards in 2018. Please visit the Oakland County Achievement Awards Portal to learn about each award and how to apply. The deadline for award submissions is Monday November 12th (8:00PM).

It is the time of the year when 4-H program staff start hearing that our members are not getting the important information they need on how to sign up for cool 4-H events, awards, and scholarships. Often the problem is that the member has not re-enrolled in 4-HOnline for the current 4-H year. Fortunately, there is an easy fix to this problem. Families can visit: https://mi.4honline.com to reenroll. There are downloadable guides to help you enroll located on the login page. If you’re having issues enrolling, please call (248) 858-0889 and speak to Kelly or April for help.
It is important to enroll in 4-H through the 4-HOnline system for a few reasons. It where emergency contact info lives in case it is needed, and ensures youth are eligible for the American Income Life supplemental insurance to help cover medical bills if anything happens at a 4-H activity. For leaders, it is what allows you to act on behalf of 4-H and be covered by under MSU’s liability insurance umbrella. Its also how 4-H staff keep track of participation for awards and scholarships. Lastly, 4-H is a publicly funded entity, registering as an active participant in our program helps staff to tell the 4-H story and ensure the program continues for youth in Oakland County.
Congratulations to Mary Hutka of Oakland County on being awarded the Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award!
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Mary Hutka of Oakland County was among four Michigan Farm Bureau 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award recipients honored on Oct. 5 at the 4-H Emerald Awards Ceremony in East Lansing.
The award recognizes the outstanding youth education and leadership development achievements of Michigan 4-H volunteers in the beef cattle; dairy cattle; goats; horses; horticulture, crops and soils; poultry; rabbits; sheep; swine; and veterinary science project areas. Honorees receive $1,000 grants they can use for training, to buy supplies or curriculum, or to enhance local or statewide programming.
Mary is the longtime volunteer leader and innovator of the Tollgate 4-H Club in Oakland County. She has guided young people in taking on leadership roles while raising vegetables and livestock for market. Mary is passionate about growing true leaders and empowers young people by allowing them to take ownership of club activities and educating them about agriculture. Many members in the Tollgate 4-H Club have gone on to receive 4-H state awards and county medals and to pursue agriculture-related college degrees.
“I enjoy watching the kids grow and learn,” said Mary. “The club has kids from varying backgrounds and interests, yet they manage to work together and support each other.”
Mary was honored at the Michigan 4-H Foundation’s 4-H Emerald Awards Ceremony. The event was hosted and emceed by State Sen. Judy Emmons, a Montcalm County 4-H alumna and 2014 4-H Emerald Clover Society inductee. The other 2018 recipients of the 4-H Excellence in Agriculture Award are Diane Keinath of Saginaw County and Kathy Grau and Mary Hammer of Washtenaw County.
