During the 2018 National 4-H Week, Michigan 4-H is encouraging 4-H youth, volunteers, staff and supporters to get out and inspire youth to be True Leaders through hands-on doing. From empowering them to pursue their passions to learning new skills, this October is a perfect time to make a difference for the next generation.

Across the country, the goal of the 2018 National 4-H Week is to reach one million doers. You can help accomplish this by sharing how 4-H has inspired you or your kids to do on social media channels and with individuals in your community. Though every day during National 4-H Week is a great time to show your pride, Tuesday, Oct. 9, is the official 4-H Spirit Day where it is encouraged to wear 4-H apparel to show your 4-H pride.

Jayno 4-Her Dana Baird is heading to Archery World Championships

Dana

A huge congratulations Dana Baird, a member of the Jayno 4-H club!

Dana Baird has been shooting archery since she was 9 years old.  Her bow is an Olympic Recurve Freestyle, and she had another fun year.  She is in her element, and it shows.  At her first outdoor competition in over a year she shot a score good enough to earn her special accolades from US Archery.  At the state field and hunter competition, she broke former Olympian, and her mentor, Deb Ochs record that had been standing since 1983.

The NFAA sent out an email asking archers that were considering attending the World Championship, if they would like to be considered for the United States team for the Tournament of Nations competition held in conjunction with the World Championships. This would be the third time she competed in a World Championship.  It turns out that the Tournament of Nations teams are comprised of the seven best archers from each competing country in their individual archery style.  For Dana’s style, she would not only be competing against other recurve archers from the US, but also compound archers.  She knew that basically ‘she was going to have to shoot like she has never shot before to be considered over the compound archers.’  To which she replied, “hmmm -OK!’

At the NFAA Outdoor Nationals she shot scores that beat ALL other recurve archers no matter what their category.  The people collecting her scorecards could not believe that a recurve archer could shoot those scores.  She won the Nationals, thereby sealing her position to compete at the World Championship as a Champion of the United States.  The greater news came two weeks later when we were informed that Dana had earned one of seven spots to represent the United States on the US Tournament of Nations team – the seven best archers that the United States has to offer.

Volunteer Background Checks

Check

Volunteer Background Checks

Starting last year, Michigan 4-H began requiring volunteers to do national background checks every three years. Volunteers with birthdays in the months January – April were required to complete their checks last year. Volunteers with birthdays in the months of May – August will be required to complete their check this year before their registration can be approved and profile activated in 4hOnline. If you haven’t done it yet and your birthday falls in one of those months, you will need to do so ASAP*. You should have received an email from April Clos asking you to do so.

*If you have just recently become a volunteer and completed the Volunteer Selection Process in the last year you do not need to complete a background check at this time.

To start this process please visit  https://business2.backgroundchecks.com/invitation/welcome/0Rgp

If you did not, please reach out to our office at 248-858-0889 for the instruction email or for help completing the process.
