Tollgate Farm 4-H Club Spring Travels!
Tollgate Farm 4-H Club has been very busy this spring –
making many visits throughout the community promoting their club and 4-H!
- On 4/28 they made their way to the fairgrounds in Davisburg
for weigh-in and Discovery Day with their market lambs and goat kids!
- The following Sunday, 5/6 club members, Tollgate lambs and goat
kids spent the day at a charitable event in Milford for Kids Kicking Cancer
where they brightened the lives of so many!
- Most recently the Tollgate Farm 4-H Club setup a farm stand
at the Wixom Founders Day Festival on Sunday,
5/20/2108 in Gibson Park. Members
sold Tollgate maple syrup, seedlings, granola, fruit leather and of course goat
milk soap! Members participated in the
fun and Aaron Hutka earned 1st place in the pie eating contest!

The Oakland County 4-H Fashion Show is an opportunity for youth to showcase their skills in making and selecting fashionable attire.

This year's show was on May 11th held at Waterford Central UMC and hosted by the Jayno 4-H Club. Over 30 different outfits and wearable fashions were on display.
The purpose of the Fashion Show is to help 4-H'ers in Personal Appearance Project areas receive recognition for their efforts in the project and to give them experience modeling before an audience.
Personal Appearance projects have been expanded from the definition given to the original "sewing" projects to include the "total look". This look can include such diverse aspects as health, nutrition and exercise, as well as clothing construction or purchasing and coordinating outfits.
As in all 4-H projects, personal appearance encompasses many aspects of youth life skill development. By building self-esteem and self-confidence, a 4-H'er is able to move into other challenges with a greater chance of success.
The garments were judged in 3 categories: Buymanship, Construction, and Wearables.
If you are interested in participating or learning more about the Fashion Show next year please email Jason Scott at jscott@msu.edu.

Excerpts from the Oakland County Blog
"On May 23rd, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners showcased county government in action to area high school students during their annual Youth in Government Day. Civic engagement was the priority for the day as students engaged in critical thinking exercises and learned about the different departments in county government and how they support the community.
The event, which drew more than 100 high school students from across the county, featured speakers, mock debates, a courtroom visit, and engaging demonstrations centered on Oakland County’s role in the lives of its citizens.
Commissioner Shelley Goodman Taub opened the event with a warm welcome for the students and a brief presentation on the three branches of government. Students then heard from representatives and officials with experience across the branches of government, including Deputy County Executive/CIO Phil Bertolini, Oakland County Clerk and Register of Deeds Lisa Brown, Treasurer Andy Meisner, Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash, and a Panel of Commissioners."

Hello
Teachers,
MSU
Tollgate Farm is reaching out to innovative elementary and middle school teachers
to let you know about a special opportunity taking place at the farm this
summer.
We hope
you’ll join us for Teaching Science Outdoors, a three day professional
development workshop which will guide teachers through sharing the scientific
process in an outdoor setting and provide best practices to meet
expectations set forth by the Next Generation Science Standards.
Join us
for this time of exploration and discovery as Dr. Norm Lownds of the MSU
Children’s Garden and Yu Man Lee of the Michigan Natural Features Inventory
model co-creative science learning in the field. Time will be spent in the
living laboratory of the farm, traversing the fields and forest using
principles of investigation, data collection and analysis, and inquiry learning
to help you make science come alive for your students.
Please share this
opportunity with every K-8 teacher and school you think may be interested.
Teaching teams are encouraged but not required. Financial aid is available
through the financial aid process on our website.
