Boil Water Advisory

 

Pontiac, MI, October 23, 2017 – Effective immediately, the following communities have issued a boil water advisory for schools, healthcare facilities, residents, and businesses:

  • Bloomfield Township
  • Commerce
  • Farmington Hills – North of 696
  • Keego Harbor
  • Oakland Township – The Hills of Oakland and Kings Pointe Subdivisions only
  • Orchard Lake
  • Novi – In the area bounded by 14 mile on the north, 8 mile on the south, Napier on the west, and Haggerty on the east.
  • Rochester Hills – North of Hamlin and West of Livernois
  • Wixom
  • West Bloomfield Township
  • Walled Lake

Crews are working to resolve the issue, but the advisory is in effect until further notice.  Residents and businesses may also experience low water pressure, no water, or discoloration.

Under this boil water advisory, all schools in the area of impact, or those experiencing loss of water pressure or discoloration, should immediately activate Emergency Plans. If your facility includes a food service operation, the Emergency Action Plan for Retail Food Establishments is available at www.oakgov.com/health.

Boil Water Instructions:

  • Bring water to a rolling boil for one minute. Let cool for 15 minutes before drinking. Store the cooled water in a clean       container with a cover.

Schools should use boiled water that has cooled or bottled water for:

  • Drinking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing fruits and vegetables
  • Preparing food
  • Making ice
  • Pets

Other Steps:  

  • Do not drink tap water.
  • Do not use tap water to make drinks, coffee, juices, or fountain soft drinks.
  • Cook with tap water ONLY if food is boiled for at least one minute.
  • Wash your hands and bathe/shower as usual. Bathing is safe as long as no water is swallowed.
  • Wash laundry as usual. Laundry washed in hot or cold water is safe.

What To Do After The Advisory Ends?

  • Turn on your tap slowly and run the water to flush water pipes for five minutes.
  • You may need to clean appliances such as water softeners, filter units, water dispensers and ice makers. Read the owner’s manual for directions to clean appliances.
