Oakland County Epi Alert – Measles 10/13/17

Oakland County Health Division is advising patrons and staff of a South Lyon restaurant of a possible measles exposure. Unvaccinated individuals who visited or worked at Lucas Coney Island at 22689 Pontiac Trail on Sept. 29 between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. should call a doctor if they have any signs or symptoms of the disease. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services notified Oakland County about a non-Oakland County resident who was contagious but without any symptoms who was at the restaurant during that time. 

Post-exposure prophylaxis. 

  • No post-exposure prophylaxis is recommended since the window for prevention has passed. 

Individuals considered immune to measles:

  • 2 doses of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) after the first birthday
  • Born prior to 1957
  • Lab evidence of immunity
  • Lab evidence of disease

Report suspected cases. Clinicians need to report all suspect rash illnesses consistent with measles, in children or adults, to Oakland County Health Division’s Nurse on Call at 800-848-5533. Please keep in mind that the clinical presentation may be altered if the individual has had previous measles vaccination.

Lab testing. Clinicians are encouraged to test symptomatic individuals for typical respiratory pathogens, along with a serum Measles IgM.  In addition, a throat swab should be taken for Measles PCR.  Additional measles testing guidance: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mdch/Measles_388976_7.pdf
