Samples of plant and insect/pest problems can be submitted for identification and management recommendations.  Samples can be mailed or brought in directly during our regular office hours.  Avoid mailing samples on Fridays.  Diagnostic fee is $5.00 per visit. (Cash, check or credit card accepted)

"How to Garden with Comfort, Ease and Simplicity" presented by Jan Bills, a Certified Landscape Designer, Advanced Master Gardener and owner of "Two Women and a Hoe" a company providing indoor/outdoor sustainable landscape and garden design installation.

Everyone is also invited to bring a potted-up plant to enter in the annual silent auction (which is a great time to add a plant from your wish list). As always, light refreshments will be served.

Tollgate - Evenings in the Garden
Evenings in the Garden at MSU Tollgate Farm & Education Center brings in professionals to Tollgate to share with the public their expertise on a variety of topics. Attendees walk away with their gardening questions answered, and better able to understand how to make the plants around their home or apartment flourish. Some classes include a tour of the grounds, or a hands-on learning experience.

 

Upcoming Evenings in the Garden:


Fall Container Planting
Thursday, September 14, 2017
6:30 – 8:30 pm

In this class, discover how to use perennials and annuals in a container arrangement for the fall. Find out how to mix together the right combination to make a spectacular show for your porch, patio, or any other spot where you would like some extra color and pizazz. Learn how to choose the right components to make your containers successful: plants that play together well, the right soil, and the pot that shows it all off.

Nick Zimmer has pursued his love of horticulture since high school. He had a successful landscape business then, graduated from MSU in horticulture, and oversaw a 60,000 square foot growing facility in New Jersey before returning home to Michigan.

$20 each class. Advance registration is required.

 Stage Nature Center Native Plant Demonstration Garden

“Weed or Wildflower?”

The Troy Nature Society is looking for volunteers to help create their new Native Plant Demonstration Garden at the Stage Nature Center in Troy.

This special wildflower garden is a designated native plant area to be used for both beautification and education to visitors and school groups.

The garden area is already in place and located near the front entrance of the center.

We have a variety of tasks to choose from including: plant identification, bed preparation, planting, invasive species removal, educational signage/brochure creation, and installation of bird/bee houses.

Meadow Brook Garden Club

Meadow Brook Garden Club maintains the gardens on the estate grounds on Tuesday mornings.
All who are interested in gardening are invited to join in helping to maintain these beautiful gardens.
Experience is not required since each garden has a captain who will assist the volunteers.
2017 Gardening Days are every Tuesday morning through October 10, 8:30 a.m. to Noon.
Bring hand tools (pruners, trowel, cultivator) and any other gardening items that you normally use. Come and join us and meet fellow gardening enthusiasts.

Tollgate Gardens
MSU Tollgate Educational Center

Are you a Master Gardener or a home gardener who wants to expand your experiences and knowledge?  MSU Tollgate Gardens are the perfect place for you. Here is the opportunity to continue your education by working side by side with seasoned gardeners. These smart and welcoming people are always happy to share their knowledge.  Being a Tollgate volunteer has many advantages: participating in monthly programs with speakers, sharing your gardening experiences and making new friends. Garden workdays are every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon with a hot dog and potato salad lunch provided after the workday.

Tollgate is a 160 acre "Oasis" located in the heart of Novi at the corner of Meadowbrook & 12 Mile Roads. Just look for the long white fence.

Bittersweet Farm Plant-A-Row Community Garden
8551 Allen Road
Clarkston, Michigan

Volunteer gardeners convene at Bittersweet Farm every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, providing organically-grown vegetables for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

Our 2016 harvest yielded 2,400 pounds of produce, providing nutritious food for needy people in southeastern Michigan – more than 70,000 in Oakland County alone.

It’s Easy To Get Here. Get off I-75 at Exit 91, for Clarkston/Davison (also Ortonville). Turn right onto M-15 Ortonville Road and go about a mile to the second light (a set of four) at Hubbard Rd. Turn left onto Hubbard and go a half mile to Allen Road. Turn right onto Allen, and we’re the first drive on the left, 8551 Allen Road.

Any requests for “Master Gardener” volunteers need to go through Deirdre Hope at hopedeir@anr.msu.edu.
They will then be added to the Volunteer Management System, (VMS) which is only available to certified Master Gardeners.


Other requests, (educational opportunities, plant sales and other events) that are for both gardeners and the general public, should go through our online form. Deadline for submissions is the 15th of the month.

The form should be accessible by not only computers but most mobile devices as well.
