Milford Garden Walk and Market Sale

The Milford Garden Club presents its’ 22nd Annual Garden Walk and Market Sale on Friday, June 16, 2017, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 17, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  Rain or Shine.  Featured on this year’s walk will be many unique and diverse residential gardens in Milford and the nearby surrounding areas.  We also invite you to visit the Garden Club’s Certified Monarch Butterfly Garden in Arthur’s Park, across from Central Park.

Advance tickets may be purchased for $10.00 beginning in May, by visiting the Milford Garden Club web site @www.themilfordgardenclub.org and completing the mail order form.  Tickets may also be purchased at by visiting one of the following Downtown Milford locations:  Clothing Cove, Acorn Farms, or Milford Gardens on S. Milford Road and The Pond Place in Highland.

Tollgate Spring Plant Sale
Saturday, June 3, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Troy Garden Walk

Troy Garden Club's 43rd Annual Troy Garden Walk "Garden Gifts"
Wednesday, July 12th 2017  - Rain or Shine.
View 6 private gardens 9:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.


Activities at Troy Historic Village 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. include Plant Sale, Arts & Crafts Boutique, Fabulous Finds, Student Art Exhibit.

Admission to Village Free.

Advance tickets to view gardens go on sale beginning June 1 at Telly's Greenhouse, Auburn Oaks Garden Center, Uncle Lukes and Troy Historic Village for $10. On the day of walk they will be available only at the Troy Historic Village for $15.

18th Annual Rochester Garden Walk

From town to country, the 18th annual Rochester Garden Walk co-sponsored by the Rochester Garden Club and The Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farm shows off many unique and private gardens in the greater Rochester area.

Garden walk participants will have access to private area gardens chosen for their beauty, fascinating landscape designs and artwork, along with two public gardens, the Rochester Hills Library gardens and the Rochester Rotary Gateway Park.  

In addition, guests can explore the Rochester Hills Museum grounds, which are located at the historic Van Hoosen Farm homestead founded in 1840. Strollers can learn about the important role of native bees and insects in gardens at pollinator habitat structure.


This year’s event takes place Thursday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Cost is $12 in advance or $16 on the day of the event.
 

Advance purchase vouchers will be available until noon on June 14 from Bordine’s Nursery or Lytle Pharmacy, or from the museum website, rochesterhills.org/musprograms. 

Beginning June 9, tickets can be purchased at the Rochester Hills Museum, 1005 Van Hoosen Road, Rochester Hills 48306, from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. An Open Air Market featuring Michigan artisans will be held at the Museum grounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on walk day.  At 11 a.m. Rochester Garden Club members will present an entertaining and informative program with gardening and cooking tips, which is free to garden walk ticket holders.

Country Garden Club of Northville Annual Garden Walk

The annual garden walk running from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., will feature six new private gardens in and around the quaint Victorian town and township of Northville. Our centerpiece will be the 19th century Mill Race Village, 215 Griswold St. just a block north of downtown Northville. Composed of a general store, a blacksmith shop, church, school, inn, gazebo and three representative homes and gardens from the era, this unique setting is a must see. Also featured along our shady village street will be a garden oriented vendor market and lively music on the green as well as complimentary homemade refreshments inside Cady inn for all ticket holders. All of this is included in your ticket price.

Tickets are $12, if purchased in advance either direct from Gardenviews Garden Gallery, 127 E. Main Street, 248-380-8881 or through our website: www.cgcnv.org. If purchased on the day of the walk, tickets will be $15.

Tickets ordered from our website will be held for your convenience on the day of the walk at the ticket tent inside Mill Race Village.

Proceeds from this major fundraising event go toward supporting local and national organizations that promote environmental and horticultural causes and to provide scholarships for local high school seniors who plan to go into college science careers.

(Please note that walkers and strollers are not allowed due to terrain and safety restrictions)

June 8, 2017- How to Succeed in Landscape Planting
Tollgate Evenings in the Garden
Beginning gardeners - and sometimes even the best gardeners - feel discouraged when their newly planted selections wither and die. With Dr. Schutzki’s instruction, we can save money, eliminate the guilt of planticide, and enjoy the fruits of our labor. We'll learn steps to creating a successful planting project including plant selection, tips for proper planting techniques, and care during the first few years of establishment.

Tollgate - Evenings in the Garden
Evenings in the Garden is bringing in professionals to Tollgate to share with the public their expertise on a variety of topics. Attendees walk away with their gardening questions answered, and better able to understand how to make the plants around their home or apartment flourish. Some classes include a tour of the grounds, or a hands-on learning experience.

Both of these 6:30 p.m. meetings are held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, 5631 North Adams Road, Bloomfield Hills, MI, 48304, located on the West side of Adams Road between Square Lake Road and Long Lake Road.  Reservations are not required for these meetings.  

MGSOC meetings are free to MGSOC members. There is a $5.00 fee charged to our visitors.

The education topic is “Rain Gardens” presented by Drew Lathin.  Rain gardens are shallow depressions that collect rain water before it enters the municipal stormwater system.  Rain gardens alleviate problems associated with flooding and drainage; recharge the ground water supply on site; keep water clean by filtering stormwater before it enters local waterways; provide habitat and food for wildlife; and enhances the beauty of individual yards and communities.  Drew will discuss how rain gardens work, how to design and how to build a rain garden.

The education topic is “Shrubs” presented by Chuck Martin.  Chuck is a Senior Horticulturist at Dow Gardens in Midland.  His areas of expertise include:  Woody Plants, Perennials, Rose Care and Culture, Native Plants of Michigan, Vines, Invasive Plants, Ground Maintenance and Pruning.

“Weed or Wildflower?”

The Troy Nature Society is looking for volunteers to help create their new Native Plant Demonstration Garden at the Stage Nature Center in Troy.

This special Wildflower Garden is a designated Native Plant area to be used for both beautification and education to visitors and school groups.

The garden area is already in place and located near the front entrance of the center.

We have a variety of tasks to choose from including: Plant Identification, Bed Preparation, Planting, Invasive Species Removal, Educational Signage/Brochure Creation, and Installation of Bird/Bee houses. Flexible Hours.

Meadow Brook Garden Club maintains the gardens on the estate grounds on Tuesday mornings.
All who are interested in gardening are invited to join in helping to maintain these beautiful gardens.
Experience is not required since each garden has a captain who will assist the volunteers.
2017 Gardening Days are every Tuesday morning through October 10, 8:30 a.m. to Noon.
Bring hand tools (pruners, trowel, cultivator) and any other gardening items that you normally use. Come and join us and meet fellow gardening enthusiasts.

Are you a Master Gardener or a home gardener who wants to expand your experiences and knowledge?  MSU Tollgate Gardens are the perfect place for you. Here is the opportunity to continue your education by working side by side with seasoned gardeners. These smart and welcoming people are always happy to share their knowledge.  Being a Tollgate volunteer has many advantages: participating in monthly programs with speakers, sharing your gardening experiences and making new friends. Garden workdays are every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until noon with a hot dog and potato salad lunch provided after the workday.

Tollgate is a 160 acre "Oasis" located in the heart of Novi at the corner of Meadowbrook & 12 Mile Roads. Just look for the long white fence.

Bittersweet Farm Plant-A-Row Community Garden

Volunteer gardeners convene at Bittersweet Farm every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, providing organically-grown vegetables for Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan.

Our 2016 harvest yielded 2,400 pounds of produce, providing nutritious food for needy people in southeastern Michigan – more than 70,000 in Oakland County alone.

It’s Easy To Get Here. Get off I-75 at Exit 91, for Clarkston/Davison (also Ortonville). Turn right onto M-15 (Ortonville Road) and go about a mile to the second light (a set of four) at Hubbard Rd. Turn left onto Hubbard and go a half mile to Allen Road. Turn right onto Allen, and we’re the first drive on the left, 8551 Allen Road. New event submissions to the Oakland Gardener.

Any requests for “Master Gardener” volunteers need to go through Deirdre Hope at hopedeir@anr.msu.edu.
They will then be added to the Volunteer Management System, (VMS) which is only available to certified Master Gardeners.


Other requests, (educational opportunities, plant sales and other events) that are for both gardeners and the general public, should go through our online form. Deadline for submissions is the 15th of the month.

The form should be accessible by not only computers but most mobile devices as well.
