DID YOU KNOW?
The MICIP Sample Systems Plan follows the MICIP process and is one example of an approach to writing a plan around systems?
It includes suggestions for data sources, stems for writing the data story, potential results of a root cause analysis starting, a sample challenge statement, and measurable goal with end and interim targets, and options for strategies with activities.
SEL NEWS
An important piece to the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) work is helping families understand what SEL is and how they can strengthen their child’s SEL skills with simple, and fun, activities at home. Michigan Department of Education offers three Family Matters Fact Sheets that center Social Emotional Learning. These family resources are available in three languages: English, Arabic, and Spanish.
Family Matters SEL Fact Sheets:
- What is Social Emotional Learning and Why It’s Important – Defines social emotional learning and explains how families and schools can support students to strengthen SEL skills.
- Social Emotional Learning Concepts and Skills – Shares key SEL concepts and skills and how they support skill development in areas such as communication, emotion regulation, decision-making, problem-solving, and positive relationships.
- Supporting Social Emotional Learning at Home – Offers activities that families can do together to support wellbeing, growth mindset, acts of service, communication, and emotion regulation.
*To locate the fact sheets in Spanish and Arabic, click on MDE’s Family Matters page and search for the SEL fact sheets by either the “Family Support and General Resources” category or by alphabetical order by title.

MiStrategy Bank (MSB)
All MDE curated strategies have been updated and include research and evidence-based articles to support validity. All resources are current, and all links are functional. In the coming weeks, a series of secondary math strategies will be added for districts to explore.
If you have questions about how to use the MSB, MDE strategies in the MSB or need a hand with creating your own strategy, please do not hesitate to contact Dave Carlson who would be happy to assist you.

Virtual Two-day Training on EWIMS
- January 10, 2025, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
- January 17, 2025, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
The Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System (EWIMS) is an evidence-based, data-driven decision-making process that can be leveraged as part of a district’s secondary school Multi-tiered System of Supports framework.
EWIMS identifies and supports students not on track to reach expected educational milestones. A rigorous impact study conducted by the Regional Education Lab Midwest at the American Institutes for Research (AIR) provided evidence that within one year, schools that implemented the EWIMS process with fidelity showed a reduction in chronic absences and course failures. (Faria, et al. 2017).
MDE will offer interested district, school, and intermediate school district staff a free two-day virtual training on the EWIMS seven-step process.
Participants will increase their capacity to support the implementation of EWIMS with fidelity by:
- Learning about the EWIMS seven-step process
- Using a tool to assess where a school/district is in the implementation process, including collecting baseline data
- Exploring options for implementation support. If interested, please register for both sessions
Use the following links to register for the EWIMS trainings:
2025 Michigan School Testing Conference (MSTC),
The MSTC conference will be held on February 11-13, 2025, at the Sheraton Ann Arbor Hotel in Ann Arbor.
MICIP Tidbits: Third Party Integration
Third party integration gives districts access to data through an external (non-State of Michigan) data source. This requires a contract or agreement between the district and the vendor. To gain access to the data, a district must be a current customer and follow the steps below. To gain access, the district MICIP administrator should follow the steps below.
- In the upper right corner of the screen, you should see “Hi, Username.”
- Click on it and select Administrator Settings.

- In Administrator Settings, click on Third Party Integrations from the list of tabs.

- The screen below will appear. Here, an administrator can determine the integration from various sources. For example, if a district has access to Munetrix reports, then the district can enable access by clicking on the Munetrix link.

There are integrations that require additional steps to activate or provide additional functions. If a district uses MiMTSS data, the district is required to request access directly from MiMTSS after the district enables access in MICIP. Email integration is a function that provides owners of strategies and activities to receive emails notifying them of an upcoming due date or an overdue date. It also sends emails to MICIP district administrators who have not logged into the MICIP platform for more than 365 days. This notice is important because, in compliance with the State of Michigan cyber security rules, all MICIP administrators who have been inactive for more than 365 days will be deactivated. Lastly, a user receives an email if an ISD support user is impersonating him/her.

MICIP Continuous Improvement in action!
We have modified the MICIP logo to reflect the cyclical nature of the process as noted below, “repeat as needed.”
