living into ciLiving Into Continuous Improvement

At the September meeting of the Michigan Continuous Improvement Facilitators Network (MCIFN), attendees were asked to answer the question, “What does it look and sound like to live into continuous improvement?”

As part of our Living Into Continuous Improvement theme for this year, we will be sharing these responses in Continuous Communication throughout this academic year. Some of the responses included the following:

  • Student voice is present and heard.
  • Evaluation needs to be constant. Not just 1-2 times a year.
  • Use the hexagon tool to help us plan and de-select initiatives
  • Cycles of inquiry
  • The way we conduct business

MDE 2024 Continuous Improvement Conference

The MDE 2024 Continuous Improvement Conference will take place on November 21, 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lansing under the theme:

Living Into Continuous Improvement: Off the Shelf and Into the Classroom

We’re pleased to announce that the keynote speaker for the conference will be Mr. Matt Vriesman, the current Michigan History Teacher of the Year and the National Teacher of the Year. Matthew teaches AP United States History, AP World History, and AP African American Studies and is the Model United Nations director at East Kentwood High School in Kentwood, Michigan, a suburb of Grand Rapids, where he has taught for sixteen years.

According to the selection committee of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation's leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education, Vriesman's teaching stood out for his exceptional ability to tell the story of American history through the lens of his community and to integrate history with other content areas.

Vriesman encourages his students to question what they read in their textbooks and think critically about how the narrative of history impacts their worldview.

“We’re not just talking about these stories that happened 300 years ago or 1,000 years ago,” he said. “We’re really talking with each other about our present and assumptions that we’ve made about who we are. When you can get students to that place – it’s inspiring, and it’s hopeful.”

Matt will be addressing the conference on “Empowering Students Through Truth That Resonates.”

Those wishing to submit Request for Proposals (RFPs) for conference breakout presentations are asked to consider the following:

  • For many years, district and school improvement plans were the outcome of an annual exercise resulting in documents that were put on the shelf and not seen until a year later when the exercise was repeated.
  • Using the new continuous improvement process, districts and schools are developing integrated plans that identify the work they should be doing on a daily basis to improve student outcomes.

To support these plans, presenters are asked to address the question,What culture, structure, practice or supports enables taking the continuous improvement plan off the shelf and into the classroom?”

This document contains ideas and questions that presentations could address regarding this key question; proposals doing so are more likely to be considered for conference presentations. Proposals can be submitted using the CI Conference RFP link. RFPs are due on June 30, 2024.

More information about the conference agenda and conference registration will be available soon on the MASA website MDE Fall 2024 Continuous Improvement Conference | Michigan Association of Superintendents & Administrators (gomasa.org)
