DID YOU KNOW?

If you're not finding the strategy that you're looking for, did you know you can add them? Here's a resource to help you create a strategy.

MICIP PlatformRelease 2.6 - Limited Maintenance Goal

On February 23, the MICIP platform released a new pathway to create Limited Maintenance Goal.

To be a limited maintenance goal, the prior ASSIST goal and its associated strategy(ies) and activity(ies) must have been approved previously in a district’s consolidated application.

For specific information, refer to Feb. 2 memo and Limited Maintenance Goal Guide.

A Reminder: Continuous Improvement Plan Requirements in MICIP

For the 2022-23 school year and beyond, all districts must have a minimum of one active goal in the MICIP platform.

There is not a template process for districts to bypass the MICIP platform as was provided during the 2021-22 school year. For the small number of districts that used the template process, plans must be transferred from the template into the MICIP platform. (MDE memo May 26, 2022).

Plans in MICIP support the entire MICIP cycle, including implement, monitor and adjust, and evaluate.

MICIP Collaboration SeriesMICIP Collaboration Series

The final session of the MICIP Collaboration Series will take place on Wednesday, March 15 from 8:30 – 11:30 am. The session will include two flexible options, including teamwork time or topical breakouts based on participant feedback from sessions 1-3.

Even if you have not participated in the first three sessions, you are still welcome to participate in session 4 by registering at this link: MICIP 2023 Collaboration Series Registration.

Recordings and resources from the entire series can be found on the series dashboard: MICIP 2023 Collaboration Series Dashboard.

MICIP User Group MICIP User Group

The next MICIP User Group Conversation will take place on Monday, March 6 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm and will focus on addressing ASSIST plans in MICIP, including Limited Maintenance Goals, as well as other kinds of goals. The PDFs of ASSIST plans will no longer be available starting in summer, 2023.

Connecting information is as follows:

Future meetings for 2023 include Monitoring Impact on April 10 and Participant Choice on May 1.

You will find the resources and recordings for the entire year at the User Group Dashboard.

Specific meeting invitations are sent based on the data in this survey. If you have not completed it, please do so to ensure that you receive the most up-to-date information. You only need to complete the survey once, not for each meeting.

MICIP ResourcesMICIP Website Updates

The MICIP Website has been updated to include a number of resources:

The recordings and slides of the recent MDE webinars on Using MICIP to Build High Quality Plans That Meet Identification Requirements and Limited Maintenance Goals will soon be available on the MICIP web site.

In the meantime, you may request access to the PDFs of the power points and the unedited recordings with the understanding that they are not ADA compliant. If you have someone that needs the compliance features, you will need to wait until they are posted on the MDE site.

To request the PDFs and recordings, email Ben Boerkoel at boerkoelb@michigan.gov.

At the February MICIP User Group, participants discussed the following:

How would you explain the benefits regarding systems goals?

  • A system goal helps to unify a lot of the work that you might already be doing in the district.
  • Having proper systems in place helps to minimize challenges in systems goals.
  • We can monitor and adjust more efficiently when we have fewer goals in the MICIP platform.
  • Systems goals allows you to incorporate the ideas of the strategic plan for the district.
  • The system approach allows the district to monitor the entire school system as opposed to focusing just on the schools identified for additional supports.
  • The system can also help to align everyone’s vision and keep everyone moving in the same direction.
  • Systems goals help to reduce silos and redundancy that can exist within districts.
  • Systems goals help districts see the common planning framework across the district.
  • Using the strategic plan to help identify the systems goals unifies the board members to the work that happens at the building level.
  • Less overwhelming and more coherence if everything is working together.
  • Brings strong siloed work together under a single system to provide coherence across PK-12.
  • MTSS is key to driving a solid systems goal.
  • Encourages a broader and more complete data story.
  • Systems goals are helpful with dealing with staff turnover. It helps with onboarding and keeping initiatives going with new staff.
  • Systems goals help simplify the process.
  • Using systems goals is helpful to partnership schools/districts in meeting increased requirements.
  • As part of root cause analysis, teams often identify multiple causes to the area being addressed. Systems goals allow a systems solution.
  • Systems goals help everyone across the district to see the progress that is being made.
  • Systems goals can offer some consistency with materials purchases across the district rather than each school selecting a different material that they think may address their challenge area.
  • Many documents were created and just filed in the past. This focus may help lift those documents to become living again.

What are challenges to systems goals?

  • Determining which data to collect and how to pull together disparate data across the grades.
  • What/how to conduct a truly comprehensive needs assessment to determine what systems need to be addressed/developed.
  • Developing a true/accurate data story – more of an art than simply a collection.
  • Small districts may have an advantage in that they are usually not as siloed as larger districts are.
  • There have been some huge gaps in capacity for achievement of goals so helping our districts review their talent management system.
  • If the superintendent is not on board with continuous improvement, it may not reach human resources, finance, or other areas to create systems goals.
  • Approaching the work as layering of strategies instead of replacing strategies.
  • Helping our districts to review their data to determine what systems are in place or need to be in place to complete their goals.
  • First step is to create a diverse team representing various critical partners rather than independent central office staff doing this work.
