Future Proud Michigan Educator: Grow Your Own (GYO) Grants
The application window for GYO grants closed on January 31st, 2023, with over 200 applications. The estimated timeline for reviewing applications is February 1, 2023, through March 31, 2023. After competitive review and approval of awards, the Office of Educator Excellence (OEE) will notify the local education agency (LEA), public school academy (PSA), or intermediate school district (ISD) listed on the application. Notifications will likely happen in April, with support and guidance throughout the award period.
MDE Welcomes Recommendations of Outstanding Teachers and Principals
The Michigan Talent Pool is a group of elementary and secondary educators nominated by their supervisors that the Michigan Department of Education draws upon throughout the year when opportunities for engagement and recognition become available. For 2023, the Michigan Department of Education is focusing on early and mid-career educational leaders primarily working with students in grades 6 to 12.
We welcome recommendations of outstanding classroom teachers and/or principals who exhibit strong potential for professional leadership, and demonstrate the following:
- Exceptional educational talent as evidenced by effective instructional practices and student learning results in the classroom and school;
- Exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom;
- Contributions to education that are largely unheralded, yet are worthy of the spotlight; and
- An engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues and the community.
Recommendations to the Talent Pool should be submitted by the nominee's supervisor and can be made via the online recommendation form.
The nomination form includes a one-page letter of recommendation explaining how the nominee meets the above criteria. Please note that these recommendations are confidential and should not be discussed with the recommended educator or others in your school or community.

The Promising Practices Exchange is Open for Submissions
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is reminding intermediate school districts (ISDs) and local education agencies (LEAs), both traditional public school districts and public school academies (PSAs), that Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan: Promising Practices Exchange is available for submissions. Educators across the state are implementing strong practices that improve learner outcomes. MDE invites ISDs and LEAs to share their great work on the Promising Practices Exchange so others can learn from them. For more information, view the Promising Practices Exchange Memo.

University of Michigan Program Places Dozens of Educators in Michigan Classrooms, Addresses Teacher Shortage
Since 2010, Michigan Alternate Route to Certification (M-ARC) at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor has prepared teachers to develop high-quality, equitable, and socially just educational opportunities for all students. The program merges the U-M School of Education’s 100 years of experience preparing teachers using practice-based approaches with the flexibility alternative routes have to support educators learning as they teach. In the 2022-23 school year, M-ARC is training and supporting 49 early-career teachers in 42 schools across southern Michigan. Read more about the program and its plans for 2023 in Michigan News.

MDE Hosts 2023 Education Workforce Job Fairs
Developing, supporting, and sustaining a high-quality, prepared, and collaborative education workforce is a high priority of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). That's why in 2023 we're hosting Education Workforce Job Fairs to connect job seekers and those hiring teachers, substitute teachers, bus drivers, custodians, paraprofessionals, secretaries, administrators, and other education-related positions.

Congratulations to Nicole Aneed for being the first educator to renew their certificate in 2023! Nicole renewed her professional teaching certificate on January 1st. Please remember to renew your certification before the June 30 deadline.

New #ProudMIEducator Video Featuring Alfredo Aleman
Alfredo Aleman, an elementary school educator at Arcadia Elementary School in the Kalamazoo Public Schools, grew up in a low-income migrant family of 15 children. His parents instilled in Aleman a love for education from a young age. Aleman said the only option for him, and his siblings was to graduate from high school despite their family circumstances. Together their family persevered and worked together to establish their lives in the community in which they were raised.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE), in collaboration with Michigan’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports Technical Assistance Center (MiMTSS TA), is hosting an in-person literacy event—the 2023 MDE Diversity in Literature Symposium: The How and Why of Literacy on March 16, 2023, for educators and administrators in Michigan. There is space for 600 Michigan educators to learn and network in support of Michigan students and Goal 2 of Michigan's Top 10 Strategic Education Plan: Improve early literacy achievement.
