Grant Opportunities
(NEW!) LOCAL FOOD FOR SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has applied for and was recently awarded the Local Food for Schools (LFS) Grant. This opportunity comes from the USDA Supply Chain Relief Funding that was announced Spring 2022. The grant will bring $5.85 million to School Food Authorities (SFAs) who are purchasing local foods for their school meal programs. There is no application required to participate and the grant dollars will be fair shared to SFAs participating in the National School Lunch Program.
The program will reimburse SFAs for purchases of Michigan-grown grains, proteins, dairy, honey, fruit, vegetables, and beans. Minimal processing of these foods is allowed but nothing cooked, canned, or baked. SFAs will be required to submit purchasing data to the MDE to receive reimbursement. This grant will feature full reimbursement as there is no match requirement. While not required, SFAs are asked to prioritize purchases from producers that would be considered socially disadvantaged.
Trainings will be coming soon including both a recorded training located here: Local Purchasing (michigan.gov) and an in-person training at the upcoming SNAM Conference on November 11. Please forward any questions about the program to Jaime Malnar at malnarj1@michigan.gov or Wendy Crowley at crowleyw@michigan.gov.
