Permits Available for Academic Year 2022-23 Beginning July 1st
In December 2021, the legislature amended Michigan Compiled Law to allow employment of substitute teachers without a Michigan credential. This provision sunsets on June 30, 2022. Beginning July 1, Michigan schools may apply for educator permits for academic year 2022-23. Please click here for information.
Welcome Back Proud Michigan Educator Campaign
Districts that are sponsoring an educator working under permit while completing professional learning hours for recertification as part of the Welcome Back Proud Michigan Educator (PME) campaign must apply for a permit for the 2022-23 academic year, if a certificate has not yet been issued for the educator. Specific instructions must be followed to be granted a permit under the waiver options of the Welcome Back PME campaign. Participating districts with eligible educators will receive a direct communication in July with a reminder of these instructions.

Nominations Open: 2022-23 Education Support Staff Professional of the Year Award
Each school community has numerous dedicated professionals who spend their day in support of educators and students. The Education Support Staff Professional of the Year program exists to honor these outstanding staff persons. Nominations can be made using the online nomination form. Education-Related Professional Learning Credit for School Safety Training
Children and adults should learn in a safe school environment. The Michigan Department of Education is continuing its approval of school safety training as an education-related professional learning credit for renewing or progressing an educator certificate for the upcoming 2022-23 academic year. This is a renewal of an approval first granted for the 2017-18 academic year and extended through the 2021-22 academic year. Registration Open for the August Job Fair
The next Education Workforce Job Fair is scheduled for August 11, 2022 at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. This job fair is hosted by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) to connect job seekers to entities hiring teachers, substitute teachers, bus drivers, custodians, paraprofessionals, secretaries, administrators, and other education-related positions.

Nominations Open: 2022 Talent Pool
The Michigan Talent Pool is comprised of nominated elementary and secondary educators, who exhibit strong potential for professional leadership, and demonstrate the following:

Exceptional educational talent as evidenced by effective instructional practices and student learning results in the classroom and school;
-
Exemplary educational accomplishments beyond the classroom;
-
Contributions to education that are largely unheralded, yet are worthy of the spotlight; and
-
An engaging and inspiring presence that motivates and impacts students, colleagues, and the community.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) draws upon these educators throughout the year when opportunities for engagement and recognition become available.
For 2022, the MDE welcomes nominations of outstanding early and mid-career teachers and educational leaders primarily working with students in grades PK to 12. Nominations to the Talent Pool should be submitted by the nominee's supervisor and can be made via the online recommendation form.
The recommendation form requires a one-page letter explaining how the nominee meets the above criteria. Please note that these recommendations are confidential and should not be discussed with the recommended educator or others in your school or community.

Future Proud Michigan Educator Grants
The Future Proud Michigan Educator initiative is continuing to support “Grow Your Own” efforts. Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), both traditional and charter, are invited to learn more about upcoming Phase 2 grants.
School Personnel Grants: ISDs and LEAs can apply to fund school personnel seeking initial teacher certification or additional endorsements on a teaching certificate. Awards of up to $10,000 per teacher candidate may be used to reimburse tuition and fees for preparation coursework at a Michigan approved education preparation provider, licensure testing fees, or substitute permit costs.
Explore Grants: ISDs and LEAs can apply for up to $10,000 per school to implement and sustain Future PME Explore programs for students in grades 6-12. Funds can be used to build an implementation team, design a course, and engage interested students.
Applications will open for Phase 2 grants on August 1, 2022, and the application will be available through NexSys. To help prepare for applying in NexSys, application worksheets and sample budget documents will be available on the School Personnel Grants and Explore Grants webpages. Learning Forward Releases Revised Standards for Professional Learning
In late April, Learning Forward released newly revised Standards for Professional Learning. The revised Standards for Professional Learning offer educators the latest knowledge and insights to design, implement, and sustain high-quality professional learning. Report on the Condition of Education 2022
The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) released a Report on the Condition of Education 2022, which contains indicators on the state of education in the United States, from pre-kindergarten through post-secondary education, as well as labor force outcomes and international comparisons. This year’s edition includes two Spotlight indicators, which use experimental data from the Household Pulse Survey to examine possible educational impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, including homeschooling and postsecondary plans.
