Happy Holidays from the MICIP Team!

holiday imageThe Year in Review

The first week of January marks a full year since MICIP launched statewide! With this milestone, we’d like to share the experiences we’ve heard about from districts:

  • MICIP has changed motivation and conversation regarding continuous improvement.
  • MICIP has helped district teams become more focused, efficient, and effective.
  • MICIP has enabled a deeper focus on equity.
  • The streamlined MICIP process and platform made MICIP easy to use.
  • MICIP has expanded improvement team membership and incorporated new voices in the continuous improvement process, replacing a system where one person created and compiled the plan.
  • MICIP released new professional learning prior to updating the process or platform so districts were prepared for updates.
  • The MICIP resources and tools were readily available and directly supported the work.

Looking ahead to 2022, the MICIP team will enhance the process and platform, including:

  • New resources and tools.
  • New reporting and printing functions.
  • More integrated data sources (e.g., MiPHY, MiMTSS, etc.).

Save the Date

We are excited to announce that MDE will again be offering a four-part MICIP Collaboration Series allowing participants to engage with colleagues across the state as well as with their own district teams in the MICIP process.

This is a follow-up to the 2021 MICIP Collaboration Series and is intended to address the variation in readiness and capacity for districts across the state to engage in continuous improvement work.

The series provides choices for where to onboard with the learning and provides opportunities for district teams to learn and collaborate around their own MICIP plans.

You are invited to participate as a district team or as an individual. District teams will be given their own breakout rooms that will allow them to work on their own plans. Individuals will be placed in a breakout room with other single participants to allow them to share and brainstorm ideas and challenges.

The series will take place on alternate Tuesdays from 8:30—11:30 am using the zoom platform.

Dates and focus areas are:

  • February 1, 2022 – Continuous Improvement 101: This is a condensed version of the 2021 series where participants will build understanding of the current state of their own MICIP plans and will have collaboration time to discuss areas of strength and improvement with their systems, processes, and plans.
  • February 16, 2022 – Strategies and Activities: The first two hours will focus on strategies and activities, while the final optional hour will focus on the basics of MiStrategyBank.
  • March 1, 2022 – Monitoring and Adjusting: The first two hours will focus on monitoring and adjusting while the final optional hour will focus on several case studies regarding building a culture of continuous improvement.
  • March 15, 2022 – Facilitated Work Time and Team Coaching: Content for the first part of the session will be determined by participants; the additional time will provide opportunities for team work as well as time to work with coaches on a 15-30-minute rotation.

Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions; however, the ability to be present at every session is not a requirement for participation. SCECHs will be offered based on attendance.

Registration information will be available in the January 2022 Continuous Communication. For now, please hold the dates.

Questions may be directed to Dave Hundt (dundt@muskegonisd.org) or Ben Boerkoel (boerkoelb@michigan.gov).

MICIP ResourcesNew MICIP Resource

There is another new resource on the MICIP website under MICIP Resources, Resources from the Field, Assess Needs.

The Triangulated Data Sources for Academic, Non-Academic, and Systems Data is intended to suggest possible qualitative and quantitative data from academic, non-academic and systems sources to help build an effective data story.

While in MICIP the district must characterize the primary type of data used for the story, it is still recommended that consideration be given to data from all three sources.

Voices from the Field imageVoices from the Field

We asked:

How has your district addressed equity in the context of MICIP?

You responded:

"Embedded Gholdy Muhammad's 5 Pursuits ( Identity, Skills, Intellect, Criticality, and Joy) into our every day lesson planning. Gholdy is working with our Instructional Coaches as they conduct an Equity Audit of our ELA Curriculum.

We are ... helping our staff grow their racial identity, racial equity, and the actions they take in their decision making in their classroom.

Purchased a diverse literacy library per school so that our children can see themselves in the literacy they are exposed to.

We are unapologetic about leading our work through an equity lens of doing right by all students."

Thank you for sharing your experiences!

Due to the holiday, the next Voices from the Field question will be shared in the January 6 issue of MICIP Continuous Communication.
