Read by Grade Three Guide Updates

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has been working diligently to provide guidance to local education agencies around the requirements of MCL: 380.1280f (Read by Grade Three Law). As a part of this initiative, MDE staff has collected questions and resources to highlight and address specifics of the legislation. The MDE has posted the updated June 2019 Read by Grade Three Guide. The information and resources were developed collaboratively by the MDE staff and Early Literacy experts around the state.

Additions to the June 2019 Read by Grade Three Guide include:

  • Updated FAQ responses regarding Read by Grade 3 “cut scores” and assessment systems
  • Updated flow chart regarding good cause exemptions
  • New questions and responses regarding retention

All revisions/additions are identified in italics.

Please note the Read by Grade Three guide will be updated as necessary. Any updates will be added to this document on a quarterly basis, or sooner as warranted.

Read by Grade Three Parent Resources Now Available in Three Languages

To better communicate the components and impacts of the Read by Grade Three law with parents/guardians, the MDE now has the following resources available in English, Spanish, and Arabic:

Press Release: Michigan Researchers Receive $5M Grant to Study Impact of Read by Grade Three Law

The U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES) announced last Friday that the Michigan Education Research Institute (MERI) has been awarded a five-year, nearly $5 million grant to study implementation of the state’s Read by Grade Three law and its impacts.  MERI is the education research partnership between MDE, CEPI, and MSU and U of M.  Details of this work can be found in the MSU press release announcing the award.  https://edwp.educ.msu.edu/news/2019/michigan-researchers-receive-5m-grant-to-study-impact-of-third-grade-reading-law/
