Updates on Read by Grade – 2019-20 Assessment Lists

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is required under the Read by Grade Three Law to identify assessments that districts will use to assist with having all students reading at grade level by the end of third grade. The MDE approved assessment lists also help districts and schools in creating a comprehensive screening and assessment system. To comply with the Read by Grade Three legislation, districts must choose at least one assessment from the initial and extensive lists. Further information and the assessment lists can be found at the following website:

Section 35a(5) Additional Instructional Time Reporting Requirement

LEAs that received grant funding under the 18-19 Section 35a(5) Additional Instructional Time grant are required to submit an end of year report (PA 265 of 2018, Section 35a(6)).  The grantee must submit a report by September 1, 2019 to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).  The LEAs will be able to submit the required reporting components in the Michigan Student Data System (MSDS).

To support collection of this report, CEPI has posted the MSDS Collections Manual v 1.4. This new version of the manual contains information regarding the new Early Reading Deficiency Component. The MSDS EOY 2019 General collection schemas and a file sample have been updated on the MSDS website.
