The Office of Career and Technical Education has been asked to share the following:

Applications are now open for the 2018 Michigan Health Sciences Pre-College Academy.  This residential program targets the AAMC Core Competencies.  Application deadline is February 27, 2018.

This two-week intensive residential academic enrichment program is sponsored by the Michigan Medicine's Office for Health Equity and Inclusion.  The MHSPEA brings together highly motivated  rising 11th and 12th grade high school students to gain exposure to the University of Michigan and University of Michigan Medical School.  Participants will take courses that help prepare them for successful college admissions and/or a career in the health sciences profession.

Greetings, From Othelia Pryor, opryor@michiganmhc.com  If you know of any underrepresented students in 10th or 11th grade that might benefit from this program, please tell them to apply.   Students don't have to meet all of the criteria to apply to the program.  The program seeks students who have an interest in service in under-served and disadvantaged populations. This is a general description of an underrepresented student. This is the general description of ways students may be defined as underrepresented.      1) Economically challenged-low income family 2) Educationally disadvantaged-attended a secondary school in a financially designated poor district or the school did not have all of the college courses that would help students succeed 3) Socially disadvantaged-students comes from an environment that may have inhibited academic growth, (first generation college student, rural area, reservation, inner city, single-family household, foster-care setting, etc..  Most of the students are from Michigan, but that is not necessary for acceptance.  The minimum GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.  This is a firm requirement.  The two-week program residential program is from 7-15 to 7-28.  We are specifically recruiting students who have an interest in the healthcare profession.    Of course, students at this age are often not sure what they want to do, so it can also be used as a good exposure to the college environment.  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Othelia W Pryor, PhD Michigan Minority Health Coalition P O Box 4654 East Lansing, MI 48826
