Clerk Forlini

Welcome to our October newsletter!

The November 3 General Election is finally upon us!  I would like to encourage everyone who is 18 years of age or older to get out and vote!

This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to the upcoming election. Our "Video Feature" below shows how our good friend "Uncle Sam" cast his ballot while voting "In-Person."  This is a great resource for our voters who will be voting for the first time.

The "ABC's of the Nov. 3 General Election" feature gives a lot of good information on a variety of topics for voters of all ages.

So don't forget to take advantage of all the different options -- including Absentee Ballot voting, Early In-Person Voting and Election Day voting -- and get out and vote!

ABC's of the Nov. 3 General Election

Uncle Sam and ABC blocks

Below is just a sampling of the volumes of information that is located on the Clerk's Office Election Department website and the State of Michigan's Voter Information Center michigan.gov/vote.

A -- 'Absentee Ballots'

Voters can request an absentee ballot and submit it prior to Election Day by mail, in person at their local clerk’s office, or by drop box.

Voters who no longer wish to use their absentee ballot and who would prefer to vote early in person should bring their absentee ballot to surrender at their early voting site. After surrendering their absentee ballot, a new ballot is issued to complete and submit on-site.

Voters can bring their absentee ballots to an early voting site to insert into a tabulator. The election inspector must verify that voters with absentee ballots are in the correct location and that they have the correct ballot number. Once the election inspector has confirmed this information, the voter can insert a completed absentee ballot into the tabulator, just like at a polling place on Election Day.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

B -- 'Before You Go to Your Polling Location'

Michigan has prohibited the practice of displaying election-related materials at the polls for decades. This includes clothing and buttons as well as materials such as pamphlets, fliers, and stickers. If you go to the polls with a shirt or button bearing election-related images or slogans, you will be asked to cover or remove it.

Voters can take a picture of their own ballot in the voting booth. For the privacy and security of neighboring voters, voters are prohibited from holding their ballot up for a selfie and/or photo. Voters may, however, take selfies outside of the polling location and are encouraged to do so.

To find what is on the ballot or where your polling location is, visit michigan.gov/vote.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C -- 'Changing Your Vote'

Once a ballot has been inserted into a tabulator, it cannot be changed.

Voters who complete and submit an absent voter ballot by mail, in person at a local clerk’s office, or via drop box, have the option to change their vote by spoiling their original ballot and requesting a new one (deadlines apply).

Voters who insert their absentee ballot into a tabulator at an early voting site cannot spoil their ballot or change their vote.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

D -- 'Disabilities and Accessible Voting'

All voters, including voters with disabilities, have access to a Voter Assist Terminal in all polling places. The Voter Assist Terminal helps the voter mark a ballot. It will mark the ballot with the voter's choices but does not tally the votes. Once the ballot is marked, it is counted in exactly the same fashion as all other ballots.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

E -- 'Early Voting'

Early voting allows a voter to cast a ballot before Election Day, in an experience similar to voting on Election Day.

During the early voting period, voters are issued a ballot and can then insert their ballot directly into a tabulator at their early voting site.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

M -- 'Moving to New Community'

If you move to a new city or township, you must re-register. If you move within a city or township and are already registered to vote, you only need to update your address with the city/township clerk.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

O -- 'Overseas and Military Voting'

Eligible Michigan voters who live overseas can register to vote by filling out the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) or the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB). If voters submit another type of registration form, such as the State of Michigan Voter Registration Application, it will also be accepted and processed.

Signed and completed FPCA must be received by a voter’s local clerk by 2 p.m. on the Saturday before Election Day (Saturday, Oct. 31). Options for returning an FPCA, including email, fax, or regular mail, are listed in the FPCA Michigan Guidance.

P -- 'Past Election Results'

Visit the Clerk's Office web site to see "searchable" election results dating back to 1998 and all election results dating back to 1838.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

R -- 'Registering to Vote'

If you have a valid Michigan driver's license, state ID, or SSN4, you can use the online form to register to vote or update your voter registration address in Michigan.

Alternatively, if you want to register to vote or update your registration by mail, you may do so with a printable application form. A third option is to register in person at your clerk’s office.

You can register when you are 17.5 years old or preregister when you are 16 years old, but you can’t vote until you’re 18.

You can register at any time up to 8 p.m. on Election Day at your city or township clerk’s office. If you’re registering another way, your voter registration application must be received or postmarked at least 15 days before the election.

After your voter registration application is processed by your clerk, you will receive a voter identification card that will list your polling place location and your voting districts. This card is for your reference, and you do not need to present it when you go to vote. If you did not receive or lost your card, contact your local clerk for a replacement or visit Michigan.gov/Vote to check your registration status.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S -- 'Split Ticket'

Voters may “split” their ticket in the general election (November 3). Michigan voters also have the option to vote straight-ticket by selecting the option on the section of their ballot with partisan races. Voting straight ticket does not automatically include selections on non-partisan and proposal sections of the ballot.
