Library of Michigan Labor Day Closing Announcement
The Library of Michigan will be closed from Saturday, September 5, 2026 to Monday, September 7, 2026 for the Labor Day holiday. The Library of Michigan will reopen on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. All reference questions and library card applications will be processed during the week after reopening.

October 3, 2026 - Mid-Michigan Local History Conference
Historians, librarians, archivists, students, and all other local history practitioners are invited to join us on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at the Michigan Library and Historical Center in Lansing, MI for the Mid-Michigan Local History Conference. Featuring a keynote presentation and 2-tracks of breakout sessions, learn from fellow practitioners and enjoy opportunities to engage with other organizations around the Mid-Michigan region. This event is FREE to attend, but registration is required. Find registration information and full conference details at Michigan.gov/MMLHC. Several Mid-Michigan area libraries, archives, and historical organizations will have exhibit tables in the Michigan Library and Historical Center rotunda throughout the conference. If your organization is interested in having an exhibit table, please review the Criteria for Exhibitors. Exhibit space is limited. Acceptance of exhibitors is at the discretion of the Mid-Michigan Local History Conference planning team.

2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour, Authors Conversation Videos, and 2027 List Submissions
The final tour event for the 2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour took place last week featuring "Waterline: A Novel" author Aram Mrjoian at Community District Library's Corunna Branch. Thank you to everyone who attended any of the 50 programs that occurred between April and October across the state. We are grateful to the host locations who brought the programs to their communities and to the Michigan Notable Books authors who shared their time and talents as part of the 2026 tour. Thank you also to the Library of Michigan Foundation and other sponsors for supporting the Michigan Notable Books program.
Although the 2026 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour is now complete, there are still opportunities to engage with the 2026 authors. The Library of Michigan will soon start filming Author Conversations with several of the authors from the 2026 list. These recordings will be made available online through YouTube, joining previous years of Author Conversations that go back to 2020.
Additionally, the Library of Michigan is still accepting submissions for the 2027 Michigan Notable Books list. Please view the How to Submit or Recommend Books to the Michigan Notable Books Committee of the Michigan Notable Books site for full details and submission criteria. Submitters are encouraged to provide their books as early as possible to ensure the committee has a chance of reviewing books thoroughly before the final selection meeting in early December. Year 2 of the Michigan Yearbook Collection Project
The Library of Michigan has completed the second year of its Michigan Yearbook Collection project. In August 2024, the Library launched a campaign to build a statewide collection of yearbooks from Michigan high schools, colleges, universities, and vocational schools. During the first year of the project, 3,000 yearbooks were donated. With another year now complete, we’ve doubled that number to more than 6,000 yearbooks, all either on the shelves or in the processing queue to be cataloged before being added to the collection.
This project would not have been possible without the schools, libraries, museums, historical societies, genealogical organizations, and individual donors who have contributed yearbooks to the collection. Each yearbook offers a snapshot of the lives of Michiganders and preserves the stories of communities across our state. We look forward to another year of growing this unique collection.
