One Year In: A Milestone in Motion
One year ago, we launched the Michigan EV Workforce Hub with a bold mission: to create a talent engine that accelerates Michigan’s leadership in Electric Vehicle (EV) innovation while ensuring that every community shares in this economic opportunity. Today, we celebrate the progress, partnerships and potential that have powered this work forward.
In just 12 months, the EV Workforce Hub has become a model for industry-education collaboration and community-rooted workforce development. Our coalition now includes more than 90 partners across employers, training providers, unions, economic development agencies and community-based organizations.
- To date, approximately 800 participants have enrolled in a training program since January 2022 (an increase of 246% since August 2024 when the total number of individuals enrolled in training was 228).
- To date, 327 participants have completed training since January 2022 (an increase of 237% since August 2024 when the total number of training completers was 97).
- 84% of participants enrolled in training are from underrepresented populations, including youth, veterans, people of color, ex-offenders, and/or persons with disabilities.
- In addition to the approximately 800 individuals who have enrolled in a training program, there are currently around 500 individuals who are preparing to receive EV Workforce Hub-supported training through the state’s 16 Michigan Works! Agencies (currently receiving barrier removal services, career exploration activities, soft skills training, etc.).
At the most recent quarterly convening, we brought together all EV Hub workgroups for a dedicated strategic planning session, engaging partners in generating bold ideas for future projects, pilots and systems change. These discussions revealed new opportunities to enhance strategic data coordination, expand programs that address barriers to training and employment, and develop tools that support K-12 and postsecondary institutions in aligning curriculum with industry needs.
This anniversary marks not just a celebration, but a recommitment – to build a just, inclusive and high-growth future in EV talent development.
We invite you to join us in this exciting work. If you would like to contribute to any of the workgroups referenced below or would like more information, please contact us at LEO-SectorStrategies@michigan.gov.

To ensure that our work is laser-focused and equitable, the EV Workforce Hub has led statewide efforts to align data collection and job demand forecasting. Through partnerships with the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics, the Center for Automotive Research, the Upjohn Institute and local workforce boards, we are using data to not only inform strategy, but to also solidify coordination efforts.
Please be on the lookout for reports coming out later this year that are data-rich and action-oriented.
Workforce development isn’t just about job training – it’s about removing the hurdles that keep people from participating. Over the past year, the EV Workforce Hub has prioritized equity by tackling the most persistent structural barriers, including transportation.
We recently issued a competitive Request for Proposals to identify a vendor who will assist in the creation of a playbook to help guide partners seeking to create their own transportation barrier removal program.
The transportation focused project will begin to enter the implementation phase once a vendor is selected. The progression has the workgroup setting its sights on other barriers to employment and training such as childcare and housing, in addition to advocacy.
The EV Workforce Hub is helping to build tomorrow’s talent pipeline, today. At the May meeting, in addition to the ongoing work of the playbook to enhance the connectivity between K-12, postsecondary programs and employment, the group is seeking to identify a region in which to pilot the playbook.
The group featured a presentation from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity Perkins Postsecondary team to better align curriculum development to support the efforts of the workgroup.
