Over the summer, our Stakeholder Engagement Coordinator Anna Rose Benson facilitated a cohort of the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Hosted by Michigan State University (MSU), the fellowship brought 25 of Africa’s emerging civic engagement leaders to Lansing for a six-week program.
Anna Rose met with women who are leading community efforts in their home countries to address issues such as displacement as a result of war, survivor trauma, genital mutilation, menstrual education, disability awareness, democratic engagement, and telling women’s stories through media. Together, Anna Rose and the Mandela Washington Fellows further developed their leadership skills, fostered connections and found collaboration opportunities.
“One thing this taught me is that I don’t have to already know everything to be a resource for others,” said Anna Rose. “It was an honor to stand alongside and learn together with women carving their own unique leadership paths in their respective countries.”
