Editorial: 'Reconnect' workers with a better future

Local Michigan Works! agency connects student to rewarding-career through apprenticeship
Christopher Jones, a 21-year-old who graduated from high school in 2017, had been working in seasonal retail and assembly positions before he came to the GST Michigan Works! Fenton Service Center to see what help was available for apprenticeships.
Christopher took advantage of their Career Coaching Services and was invited to attend an Apprentice Readiness Training information session and interviewed with an Apprenticeship Success Coordinator in February 2019. After the interview, Christopher was selected to attend an intensive seven-week Apprentice Readiness Training funded by generous grants from The Center for Construction Research and Training and the National Institute of Environmental Health.
Christopher’s first week of readiness training began in March 2019, and by the end of April 2019, he graduated from the program with a certificate of completion. Just two days before he graduated, Christopher was hired by the Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers-Michigan Local 2 as a Bricklayer Apprentice, making $18.10/hour plus benefits.
This new opportunity has given Christopher a career path with a great wage.
