Guest Student Process Reminders

On today’s segment of Because You Asked we’re talking about the Guest student process (Pg. 20 of the State Programs Procedures Manual).

Students who are identified as guest students at your institution may receive State financial aid program funds if they meet the following:

• Have been a legal resident since July 1 of the previous calendar year, and
• Credits earned at your institution will be transferred and applied to a certificate or degree at their home institution, and
• They are currently enrolled in a degree-seeking or certification program at their home institution, and
• The Guest Student Designation Form has been completed. (Institutions must keep this form with the student’s financial aid records.

Fast Facts:

• Students are not required to have a FAFSA on file at their Guest institution. (FAFSA data will be viewable in MiSSG).
• The Guest institution is required to confirm proof of high school completion.
• Students may not receive funds at two institutions at the same time, except for Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver.
• Guest students are not eligible for F4F, Reconnect, and Reconnect Expansion.
• Michigan Achievement Scholarship Community College Guarantee students may still be considered for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship Bonus if they are Pell eligible, but not receiving Pell.
• Courses outside of the student’s degree program may count toward both the enrollment requirement and the award amount for allowable programs (see Acceptable Courses pg. 17). This includes Michigan Achievement Scholarship and the Community College Guarantee.

• The Home and Guest institution will need to communicate with one another to verify guest student policies are met.
