Since March 2020, collections on defaulted student loans had been paused. The U.S. Department of Education announced that it will start collecting on defaulted student loans beginning May 5. Below we have shared information to help support borrowers.
How do I know if I am in default on one or more of my Federal student loans?
- The U.S. Department of Education emailed defaulted student loan borrowers within the last couple weeks, notifying them of their options.
- If you are unsure if your loans are in default, log into your account at studentaid.gov to check your loan status.
I’m in default, what are my next steps?
- Contact the Default Resolution Group at 800-621-3115 or 877-825-9923 TTY for the deaf and hard of hearing.
- Options to get out of default:
- Pay the loan(s) in full.
- Loan Rehabilitation – make nine continuous payments.
- Loan Consolidation – consolidate direct loans into one loan with new loan terms.
- Update payment plan – apply for an Income Driven Repayment (IDR) plan.
