Aanii (hello)
We want to share UPDATES and ANNOUNCEMENTS from the Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver (MITW) program.
Per Executive Order of the Governor, the MITW program has moved from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR) to the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP). We are excited about this transition and want to share with you what this means for the program, students/families, Tribal communities, and colleges/universities.
- Do not worry! The MITW application process and its review process will remain the same. There are no changes to eligibility requirements or how an application is processed. We hope to improve a student’s experience with the process and expand our outreach to students and families.
What changes will you experience?
Application:
-
Fillable Form: The MITW application is now a fillable form. Enter your information directly on the form and print it before sending. Remember, an original signature is still required (do not sign digitally). Please note, the application can still be printed and filled out by hand if you prefer.
-
Driver’s License: A photocopy of your Michigan driver's license is no longer required. The MITW staff will now be able to verify a student’s residency through the Secretary of State.
-
New Student Submission: If you are a new student applying for MITW, submit your application documents directly to your Tribal Enrollment Department for certification. The Tribal Enrollment Department should send everything to the MITW office on your behalf.
-
Continuing Student Submission: If you are a continuing/returning student, complete the “Continuing student request” box and submit your updated application directly to the MITW office via our dedicated MITW email (noted below).
-
Accurate Email: Please provide an accurate email address that you check regularly so that MITW staff can contact you with questions or requests for additional information.
-
Check Your Account: Always attempt to confirm that your MITW has been awarded by checking your institution’s online student account or reviewing your financial aid award letter. If you are concerned, please contact the MITW staff via our dedicated MITW email (noted below).
