Detroit casinos report $113.82 million monthly aggregate revenue in August

Detroit, Sept. 14, 2021 — The three Detroit casinos in August reported $113.82 million in monthly aggregate revenue. Table games and slots generated $112.17 million in revenue, and retail sports betting produced $1.65 million.

The August market shares were:

• MGM, 47%
• MotorCity, 32%
• Greektown, 21% 

Table Games and Slots Revenue and Taxes

The Detroit casinos’ August table games and slots revenue was 61.7% higher than August 2020 revenue. The casinos reopened in early August 2020 at 15 percent capacity following a 4½-month closure due to COVID-19 health concerns.

Year-to-date gaming revenue for table games and slots for the three Detroit casinos rose 126% compared with the first eight months of 2020.

Monthly gaming revenue by property was higher than in August 2020:

• MGM, $52.24 million, 82.4 percent increase
• MotorCity, $36.52 million, 45.9 percent increase
• Greektown, $23.41 million, 49.2 percent increase

During August, the three casinos paid $9.1 million in gaming taxes to the State of Michigan compared with $5.6 million during August 2020.

The three Detroit casinos reported submitting $13.3 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the City of Detroit during August.

Retail Sports Betting Revenue and Taxes

Retail sports betting qualified adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) for August fell 16.5% compared with the same month last year. QAGR was up 36.2% compared with July 2021. 

The casinos' August 2021 QAGR totaled:

• MGM, $851,920
• MotorCity, $232,675
• Greektown, $565,432

The casinos reported total handle of $16,288,170. Total gross receipts were $1,648,581.

The casinos paid $62,371 in state taxes on retail sports betting. The three Detroit casinos also reported submitting $76,231 in retail sports betting taxes to the City of Detroit. 

Aggregate retail sports betting QAGR year to date through August totaled:

• MGM, $4,399,111,
• MotorCity, $5,455,773,
• Greektown, $5,549,629

Fantasy Contests

For July, fantasy contest operators reported total adjusted revenues of $1,124,275 and paid taxes of $94,439.

Aggregate fantasy contest adjusted revenues reported by the fantasy contest operators were $9.4 million and $792,242 in taxes were paid year-to-date through July 31.

"The Michigan Gaming Control Board shall ensure the conduct of fair and honest gaming to protect the interests of the citizens of the State of Michigan."
