Dear Michigander,
On this solemn morning, we mark one year since we identified the first COVID-19 cases in Michigan. We have had a difficult year. We've lost so many Michiganders, and the virus has changed every aspect of our lives.
We are marking this anniversary as COVID-19 Memorial Day in Michigan to remember and honor those we've lost. Today, Wednesday, March 10, we are asking all Michiganders to turn on outside or porch lights from 8-9 pm.
COVID-19 has brought darkness to our state. But we are asking Michiganders to turn on their lights, to remind each other that even in times of darkness, we are in this together.
We've had to make difficult decisions guided by facts, science, and data to save lives, support families and small businesses, and stand by our first responders and essential workers. But our focus has always remained on protecting the public health and public safety of every person who lives and works in Michigan. And throughout this difficult year, we have seen the bright light of determined and resolved Michiganders shine through the darkness.
To honor the one-year anniversary of COVID-19 in Michigan and mourn those we have lost to COVID-19, we have ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and on all public buildings and grounds across the State of Michigan to be lowered to half-staff today. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations are also encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
While it may be dark right now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Our brave doctors, scientists, and public health professionals working on the front lines have learned much about the virus and how to treat it. We have three safe, effective vaccines -- all miracles of science -- that will help protect you, your family, and others from COVID-19 and help us get our country and the economy back to normal.
So as we remember those who are longer with us and honor all of the sacrifices Michiganders have made over the last year, let us recommit ourselves to ending this pandemic once and for all. In this fight, we're all on the same team. Please stay safe.
Sincerely,
|
