FIRST in Michigan Robotics is looking for companies willing to sponsor high school teams that participate in FIRST Robotics Competitions (FRC). FRC introduces high school students to exciting careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by building a 5 foot tall, 120 pound robot, with the help of industry mentors, to participate in district and state competitions.
In January, teams are given the new game challenge along with a kit of components which includes items like motors, sensors, and pneumatics. Teams have until the end of February to build their robots. Competitions take place in March and April throughout Michigan.
The Governor helped put a grant in place to start a FIRST Robotics Competition team at every high school in Michigan. While the grant covers the registration fees and a coach stipend, alone it is not enough to encourage a school to jump in. They also need a great corporate partner.
There are two major areas of support a company can offer to an FRC team. The first is money. Teams need a match of $3,000 to qualify for the state grant. The second is mentors. No team can be successful without a few great mentors to help the students build the robot. Ideally a team should have two mechanical mentors, one electrical mentor and a programmer.
The competition is fierce and fun and is succeeding in growing the next generation of engineers and technologists to work in your company. Please contact Gail Alpert at gail.alpert@gmail.com to partner with a high school FRC team today.
Cheers,
Amy Cell

In an effort to retain talent in Michigan, two intern events are planned for this upcoming summer in Southeast and West Michigan. West Michigan Intern Connect and Live.Work.Detroit-Intern Immersion will showcase their regions and its opportunities as well as provide interns a chance to network with their peers and business leaders.
West Michigan Intern Connect will be held on July 30. Hosted by Hello West Michigan, West Michigan Intern Connect is a one-day event aimed at helping interns learn about the West Michigan region by touring businesses and organizations, listening to dynamic speakers, and networking with business leaders. There are also opportunities for businesses to get valuable exposure through volunteering or hosting a table at the speaker rally. For more information on West Michigan Intern Connect visit http://www.wminternconnect.com/
Live.Work.Detroit – Intern Immersion will be held on August 7. This event is hosted by D:Hive, and interns will explore Detroit with a scavenger hunt, mix and mingle with other interns living and working in the city, and network with business leaders during a strolling supper. For more information on Live.Work.Detroit – Intern Immersion visit http://dhivedetroit.org/liveworkdetroit/
Both events include a strolling dinner with area business leaders. The host organizations are currently inviting senior leadership to be a part of the strolling dinners. By participating in the dinner, business leaders will be helping showcase opportunities to young professionals and attract talent to Michigan. There is no charge for businesses or interns to participate.
Interns attending the events can also enter a video contest showcasing their summer intern experience for a chance to win a getaway that includes hotel, dinner and a stipend. Both events are in partnership with Pure Michigan Talent Connect and Business Leaders for Michigan, with the goal of attracting and retaining young talent in Michigan. It’s also a fun way to reward interns for all of their hard work!
