Tourism in Pure Michigan: Michelle Grinnell

Tourism in Pure Michigan

Tourism is one of Michigan’s largest industries – travelers spent more than $18.7 billion in Michigan in 2013. With opportunities for outdoor adventurers, city lovers, beach walkers and everyone in between, Michigan has the perfect getaway.

To kick of this month’s travel and tourism theme, Michelle Grinnell, travel and film PR manager for the MEDC, shares more about the tourism industry in Michigan and the Pure Michigan campaign.

The Pure Michigan campaign was created in 2006 to promote tourism in Michigan and since then has expanded to represent business and talent initiatives in Michigan. The idea was to create a brand that represents the diverse and authentic experiences Michigan has to offer while evoking emotions that connect people to the state.

Over the past eight years, Pure Michigan has evolved from a tourism brand, to a brand that encompasses the state more broadly. The MEDC is working closely with other state departments to find ways to represent diverse missions under the Pure Michigan brand. We work with the Department of Natural Resources and Department of Agriculture on a range of initiatives, and the Pure Michigan logo is even on the new state license plates and state road signs throughout Michigan.

We’ve also seen Michigan’s tourism industry embrace and engage in the campaign. In 2014 there are 44 advertising partners from every corner of the state, who are investing $5.7 million in the campaign. Earlier this year, more than 1,000 industry folks attended the Pure Michigan Governor’s Conference on Tourism – a record attendance – and the industry has worked together on a strategic plan to help grow the industry through 2017.

ll of this collaboration is working. In 2013, the Pure Michigan campaign motivated 4 million trips to Michigan by out-of-state visitors who spent $1.2 billion at local businesses here in the state. As the campaign has continued to grow, so to, has the return on investment – since the campaign launched in 2006 there has been $4.50 return on our out-of-state advertising dollars. In 2013, $13.8 billion was spent on leisure travel spending in the state and hotel occupancy reached record levels for a second year in a row. The campaign has been named one of Forbes’ 10 Best Travel Campaigns and the www.michigan.org website has been the most visited state-tourism website in the nation for seven years running.

While the economic impact of the campaign is the true success story, one of my favorite things about Pure Michigan is that it means something different for everyone. For me, Pure Michigan is toes in the sand on the shores of blue waters, and the thrill of finding the hidden gems just waiting to be discovered all across the state.
