Genesee County Veteran Stand Down - June 4

Genesse Stand Down Production

Genesee County Veteran Stand Down for homeless and in-need veterans and their families will be taking place on June 4, 2014 from 9:00am - 3:00pm at the downtown Flint Riverfront Amphitheater and UM-Flint Pavilion Rink.

Please bring DD-214 or VA card as proof of veteran status.

Information will be provided regarding employment, education, legal services, veteran's court and family services. There will also be information about VA benefits, healthcare enrollment, support groups, housing assistance and many other services available from VA.

The Veteran Stand Down is an event that services in-need veterans and their families with assistance, resources and services in one place. Your organization's support and services are instrumental in making this a successful event.

DTE Energy Boot Camp Looking to Fill 30 Seats

DTE Boot Camp

DTE Energy is beginning a new Boot Camp to train veterans for positions in the company's electric operations area.

The Combined Distribution Boot Camp will be from June 23 to July 25 at MIAT in Canton. There are 30 available seats for training with a potential for employment upon the training's completion. While there is no guarantee of employment, Boot Camp students who successfully complete the training are expected to be well-qualified and ready to start careers in the energy industry upon graduation.

The coursework will cover DTE Energy's pre-employment occupational specific training that covers multiple electric operation positions. Upon completion of training, the candidates will receive a certificate of completion from MIAT College of Technology and DTE Energy.

All qualified candidates are required to participate in activities prior to the start of training and complete them by no later than Friday, May 23.  SEMCA Michigan Works! will coordinate the  activities with qualified candidates.

Those interested should have at least a high school diploma or GED, including verified successful completion of high school-level mathematics including the fundamentals of algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Previous electrical experience or training is preferred.

In addition, candidates must be proficient with basic computer functions, able to carry 70 pounds of equipment, and work from ladders and elevated platforms.

Cost of Freedom Tour/Traveling Wall/Escort Ride - June 25

American Legion Post 26 is honored to be hosting the Cost of Freedom Tour, Traveling Wall, and Cost of Freedom Escort Ride June 25-29. All bikers, classic car and military equipment owners are invited to join them in escorting our fallen heroes from Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo to Niles High School, in Niles.

Registration is required by June 18 and there is a fee of $25

The police escorted ride with staging begins at 2:00pm and departs at 5:00pm

Wayne State 4th Annual Golfing for Veterans - August 2

Wayne State's Military and Veterans Community is hosting their 4th annual "Golfing for Veterans" event on Saturday, August 2. Registration begins at noon and the cost is $125 per golfer. Lunch will be served starting at 12:30pm and a steak dinner will be held at 6:00pm

Combat Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan - PTSD Study

PTSD Study

The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare is recruiting OEF/OIF Combat veterans to participate in a PTSD study investigating evidence-based treatments for PTSD and differences in biology and brain function.

The study is recruiting two groups of volunteers. The first group will consist of veterans who are experiencing symptoms of PTSD, such as:

  • Nightmares, upsetting memories, or anxiety
  • Others noticing you’re detached or irritable
  • Difficulties in adjusting back to civilian life

The second group will consist of veterans without PTSD symptoms who want to help fellow veterans by participating in important research.
