Gain High Tech Skills While Obtaining a Degree

MAT2 Latest

The Michigan Advanced Technician Training program (MAT2) combines the needs of students and industry partners by creating a dual-education system to produce a pipeline of educated and highly-qualified employees for today’s job market openings.

High-demand and well-paying manufacturing and technology jobs are going unfilled because of a shortage of workers with the necessary skills to fill them. MAT2 is a chance for returning veterans to receive the necessary training and experience to compete for these job opportunities.

Students of the MAT2 program will be provided with:

  • College tuition paid for by a participating employer
  • On-the-job training with pay
  • An associate degree in a high-tech, in-demand field
  • A guaranteed job upon successful completion of the program

The program is offered at five community colleges throughout southeast Michigan (Henry Ford, Macomb, Mott, Oakland, and Wayne County), all of which have the equipment and facilities necessary for training. The participating companies are highly versed in the training content to ensure the curriculum will fully prepare students for a successful career.

Turn a dream into a reality today. Visit mitalent.org/mat2, or send an email to MAT2@michigan.org to find out if MAT2 is right for you.

Petoskey Plastics Honored for Their Commitment to Veterans

Petoskey Plastics

Pictured from left to right, Karen Draves (HR, Petoskey Plastics); Allen Nash (VSD); Paul C. Keiswetter (President / CEO Petoskey Plastics); and Kristin Keiswetter-Clark (Director of Organizational Development Petoskey Plastics).

On Thursday January 9, the State of Michigan Veterans’ Services Division honored Paul Keiswetter of Petoskey Plastics for their outstanding commitment to help and hire veterans. Paul Keiswetter received specially-minted commemorative coins and certificates recognizing their commitment to help veterans successfully transition from military service to employment.

“The Veterans’ Services Division is in the business of helping Michigan’s returning heroes find jobs,” said Allen Nash, JVSG Program Manager of the Michigan Veterans’ Services Division. “When we encounter a Michigan business that shares our commitment to helping veterans, we take notice. The State of Michigan owes Petoskey Plastics a debt of gratitude for stepping up to provide jobs for the men and women who have served our country.”

Paul Keiswetter was nominated for the award by Doug Robinson, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist with the Michigan Veterans’ Services Division. Robinson knows first-hand of the company’s commitment to seek suitable veterans for available jobs. “This Michigan employer recognizes that veterans bring a strong work ethic and valuable skills gained through their years serving our country,” said Robinson. “Veterans possess exceptional experience, dedication and discipline – traits the people of Petoskey Plastics know they’ll find when they hire a veteran.”

Last November, in his Special Message on Talent Development, Governor Rick Snyder highlighted the unique skills veterans bring to the job, including leadership and a strong work ethic tested under extreme circumstances. He also cited their real-world work experience and transferrable technical expertise – qualities Michigan employers can tap to benefit their own businesses and help grow the Michigan economy. He challenged Michigan businesses to consider veterans when making hiring decisions and to help the veterans they employ more fully access their benefits.

The Veterans' Services Division, part of the state’s Workforce Development Agency (WDA), is charged with helping qualified Michigan veterans and their eligible spouses find employment. A staff of 42 Veterans’ Employment Specialists works on site at 85 Michigan Works! Agency offices around the state, meeting qualified vets where they live to help them find jobs or get the training they need to get a job.

Michigan veterans are encouraged to visit their local Michigan Works! Agency which offer a variety of services to both veterans and employers.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency – Serving Those Who Served

MVAA

The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency serves as the central coordinating point, connecting those who have served in the United States Armed Forces and their families, to services and benefits throughout the state of Michigan. MVAA is responsible for administration and operation of the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund, Michigan Veterans Homeowners Assistance Program, Michigan’s two veterans’ homes, constituent service or referral and the state's grant to chartered veterans' service organizations and the Michigan Association of County Veterans Counselors.

The idea to create the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) was announced by Governor Rick Snyder in his January 2013 State of the State message as an answer to a disjointed veterans service model that failed our state’s veterans. The agency opened its doors on March 20, 2013, the 10th anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and serves as the central coordinating point, connecting those who have served in the United States Armed Forces and their families, to services and benefits throughout the state of Michigan.
